If you want to do flight training though you get the short end of the stick and get $10K and that is it.

My Question:
I am a 23year veteran with the full 9/11 GI bill. I am interested in using it for flight training. I understand that it will pay for up to $10,000/yr for flight training. What does that do to the benifit though? Can I use it for traditional college and flight training at a different school at the same time? How does using it for flight training affect the 36 months of time that I have?

The VA answer:
Please note that under the Post 9/11 GI Bill only tuition and fees is paid for flight training, no housing. You cannot pursue a degree at one school at the same time you are receiving benefits for flight training. The VA will not pay for two different programs simultaneously.

If you are 100% eligible for benefits than your 36 months of entitlement will be charged using the following calculation:

$10,000/360 days (not 365) = 27.7778

For every 27.7778 equals one day of entitlement

Did you contact the VA help at the link I posted above? Did they give you a different answer than what I copied for y'all above?

This question was thrown out there earlier but never really answered. I'm thinking about using my post 9/11 GIB to get a type from HPA. I've already transferred all of my benefits to my son who is 2 years old. Is there some clock that is started that says once benefits are used, you have 10 years to use the remainder. Obviously this would be a problem since my son can't use his transferred benefits for another ~16 years. Any idea?

There is a timeline for when you can use the benefits(based on 15 yrs from when you were initially qualified). It is stated on your certification letter. However, even if you use some of it, there is no timeline for your child except an age limit.

Yes, I think you can use some and transfer the rest to your kid(s) who then have no time limit.

Actually, you CAN use some of it and the rest can be transferred to your children(as long as they have been listed on the transfer of eligibility form prior to your retirement.) but they can only use the benefit until they turn 26 yrs old. So if your child is 16 then effectively they only have 10 yrs.

Theres also this provision under the post 9/11
If you are enrolled in any degree program that consists of flight training at a public Institution of Higher Learning you can be reimbursed up to the resident in-state cost of the training and will be eligible to receive your housing allowance and the books & supplies stipend.
If you are enrolled in any degree program that consists of flight training at a private Institution of Higher Learning you can be reimbursed up to the full cost of the training or $17,500 per academic year, whichever is less. You will also be eligible to receive your housing allowance and the books & supplies stipend.
At this point I am trying to figure out what schools these would apply to. Even better would be ones Near Houston or in Texas.
