I definitely value home time but also know if I get stuck for a while on reserve I'd rather drive to a crash pad than have to commute two legs to an out station base. Luckily I have a little more time to make a decision and have some other options.
I TRIED to get that outstation out of training but got CVG instead. I have a house within 1 hour of Norfolk. I did get ORF after my last bid, but have to suck it up at CVG until it takes effect (1 July). I understand you can ask to be scheduled at another base for reserve but you have to set it up for each reserve period, and you don’t know if they can set it up that way until the day before the reserve period.

What's the bare minimum to apply? I'm talking about CTP/Initial hours discounted. 1460/70?

Default Pick up trips?

Given the little amount of flying Reserve FOs appear to do at PSA (say, out of PHL, for instance), is it possible to pick up trips during your days off?

It is. But you’re already at 11 days off for the month. And if you’re commuting to reserve, even less if you have to come in a day before.

It’s hard to pick up on days off. They won’t let you on a trip that overlaps RAPs, cuz they need you in base to not fly.

I was on reserve the last couple of months. I bid first out and picked up everything in open time I legally could. I would go down to 7 or 8 days off a month. Only logged about 35-40 hours per month. I had almost equal time deadheading places. Credit was pretty good though, because anything picked up in open time automatically goes on top of guarantee.

I did reserve for about 6 months. I wasn’t able to pick up a single trip. The default reserve line is 5-on 2 or 3-off. The grid never had a green day and almost every trip was 3 or 4 days so it wouldn’t allow me to legally pick anything up. I was lucky and ended up flying a decent amount 40-50 hours while others from my Indoc class weren’t flying at all. I didn’t do anything different than them, just seemed to work out.

I’ve been on reserve for nearly a year. I live in base which isn’t bad. I’ve gone from 21 days off (including days where I was on call but didn’t get used) and flying 22 hours to months where I have 11 days off and fly 65. I’ve been able to pick up a 2 day trip every month I’ve wanted to on days off...but with the new pay structure I don’t really have any desire to do that anymore. It’s easy to do so if you live in a base, but like others said...if you commute, it’ll be tough, unless you commute from somewhere close like AVL GSO GSP.

Which base were you at where reserve was relatively short and ended up flying more?
