My question is, how bad is commuting on reserve, really? And, what advice would you all have?
I have a feeling I'lI periodically be based in PHL or DCA as a NH. I live an hour North of CLT, so once I can hold that as reserve it will be no issue relocating or driving to CLT. I have 2 other airports and CLT I can commute out of, and all of these airports are located central to where I live.
Financially, I can afford EITHER paying for my own commuter hotels OR signing a lease on an apartment in either PHL or DCA (Or DAY if I surprisingly got it) for the time being. I still have a warm place at home, so I can also come home whenever.

Also- I'd love to hear any tips for Class and the on boarding process!

Thanks,
M

Many have been and are still stuck commuting to reserve. I highly suggest getting a Crashpad versus signing a lease somewhere. It’s ~$250 per month versus spending money on rent at a base that could close anytime the company decides. You’ll most likely be stuck with 0500 reserve and have to commute in the night before but you may get lucky with a later reserve block. It’s doable and not as bad as many make it out to be.

you’ll be sucking it up for several years if it is in fact tough. But you don’t know what you don’t know, so come on in the water’s fine.

Commuting to reserve wasn’t great. DCA wasn’t a bad commute because IAD was a option. Not a lot of flying to be had out of DCA though, so expect a lot of crash pad and airport appreciation. If you get stuck with the 0500 shift, expect to come in earlier the night before due to the commuter clause. Just don’t sign a lease unless you’re willing to live in that base.

Welcome, glad you finally made it. In terms of commuting to reserve, while never having done it myself, I do commute for a line and even that sucks, so naturally I would imagine reserve to be utter hell. I know you would like to hear the suck being only a few months, but I would think it will be much longer given the current climate. You being young with no obligations will however dramatically lower the suck factor.

I may be an outlier here, but I would rather spend twice as much on hotels than have a crash pad. I am older though so maybe that has something to do with it. Either way, good luck and hang in there, you are positioned well to benefit once this whole mess is behind us.

Is DAY senior? I noticed he said “if he surprisingly got it.”

Most junior Dayton award was a 2/19 hire. So on property a year before the music stopped. So in the grand scheme of things, relatively senior. Full of CVG refugees at this point hoping to drive to work.

DCA and PHL will be the two junior bases. If you are commuting and looking to get a crashpad, I’d recommend DCA. Many of the crashpads are a 20 min walk from the airport, one stop metro stop, or quick Uber if really needed.

We’re also ramping up our ops in DCA starting next month (April) going from 5 to 45 daily departures. Fun flying as well.

Don’t expect CLT anytime soon after training and when you do get it you’ll be on reserve forever. Thanks be been here 4+ years and would still be on short call reserve in CLT.

4yr 3 mo and held R1 for April in CLT
Philly crashpads out the yin yang in Tinicum/Lester which is a $2, 5 minute ride on the bus from the airport mine was $200 with a bunch of mainline flight attendants who honestly were way more fun to hang with than most pilots

Only because people we deferring to RD2. I got a RD1 in DCA for April outright at 4 yr 2 months.

I was 8 from the bottom of the seniority list in CLT during the furlough and I was able to get 1100 or 1300 reserve every month which allowed me to commute in day of. I think the non-commuters prefer the 0500 SCRs.
