It's optional, believe it or not at least 1/2 of the class requested the books instead.

The memory sticks have a lot more information than just the manuals. There are numerous study guides that the instructors will give out, an FMS trainer, cbt/system study guides, and much more that are given to the students in digital format than can help a lot.

I applied during a weekend, received an email Monday inviting me to an interview 2 weeks away. Interviewed, offered a class date 3 months ahead, official job offer was in an email by the time I made it home that night. Now just waiting for class...
I never did ask if I could get into a class if their were no-shows. Currently employed until my class date, so had no reason to ask.

I can not tell if the company hopes that only 30 show up and make it to sims, or if they really want more. I have asked, but have not heard any real answer.
Personally, I would have volunteered to go to an earlier class and wait, in hopes of a no-show. If all 35 showed up, I would have gone back home and been thankful that I had the chance to go to an earlier class. Or, maybe they could call everyone on the Friday before the first class and make sure that everyone is actually going to show up. I will say, that in my class, there seemed to be no surprises as to who showed up and who didn't. The instructors had already pulled the name tags from those that were not going to show up before we arrived on the first day. We knew who they were, as the name tags and training materials were on the counter at the front of the room.
30 may work better for the IPT's and sims....that might be what they want to show up and make it that far. We do have the new 4th IPT now in the school house, so that will certainly make things easier.

As of the Dec 13th seniority list, 950 which includes people still in training. Over 150 of those are non-flying pilots (instructors, management, etc... ).
Attrition to the majors seems to really be picking up, especially in the last month. I would bet that more than 50% of all new hire classes from here on out will cover the attrition, and the remainder will be new growth pilots. There is still the potential for upgrades under 2 years for several more months.
