Is every XJ pilot issued the same pack of Jepps? Or does it depend on the equipment and base? For example, a MEM Saab guy won't be flying to AUS, DFW, MHT, FCA, YUL, or HPN, so does he still haul all those Jepps around? Or a MSP CRJ-900 guy - he's not going to TUP or AEX, right?

Pardon my ignorance, but until recently my airline has been mostly a one-base, one-type kinda affair so everyone gets the same pack.

And we weren't issued binders, either. My old OfficeMax binders are falling apart, and I was wondering if I should spring for new ones before my class date. Does XJ provide Jepp binders to new-hires, or some cheap plastic binder, or just plates with a rubber band holding them together?

Thanks!

Plates are by equipment, and equipment alone. Base does not matter at all, as you will certainly, at some point see each of the bases your equipment flies through. XJ does not provide binders for your Jepps, or your company issued airport directory (which is the same for all equipment, regardless of usefulness). You get a big, heavy, stack of papers wrapped in plastic wrap.

They do not provide binders of any sorts so I would get your own, they will just give them to you in the plastic wrapping.

I recommend Scott Binders from www.scottleather.com, I got mine for 55 bucks with my name printed on them, they are very durable, and I personally like the look, feel and price of them better than jepp binders.

Scott Leather is mostly well known for their Flight Kits "Bags"

A big heavy stack in plastic wrap - that's what I'm used to around here.

OK, I'll stop by the binder store one of these days and pick up some fresh ones. I can use them at my old job while I'm waiting for my class date.

Thanks for the replies.

I will say that I picked up the cheapest Jepp-brand binders available last year, and they look the same now as they did then. I'm sure the Scott/Coyote binders are better, but for new FO pay, I don't think they're a bad deal.

What does everybody do with their airport directories? Do you have a seperate binder for just those? Or do you put them in with your Jepp Charts?

I use a 2" Jepp leather binder for my approach plates and another for my enroute charts. I use a 1" Jepp leather binder for my airport directories.

Others jam their approach plates into their 1" binder and manage to hang it off to the side where it's in view and they don't have to pull them out. I guess you get to knowing the places you often fly into and you just put those charts into your 1" Jepp and they fit fine.

For all you future XJ Saab drivers out there, buy two 2" binders (most people use Jepp binders but there are other good options). There are a few different ways to arrange you charts. I recommend putting only your approach plates in one of the binders, and combining the other with the rest (revision logs, chart notams, terps, AF/D's, charts).
