haha yea they felt numb at first...I haven't taken pain meds other than when I was going to remove the packing (I took the max allowable for that). I feel pretty decent...but not planning on flying for at least another week or so (I see the doc tomorrow).

Need reassurance I didn't make this up....

Is the following an "illegal assignment" per the contract?

A6 window, tomorrow is a soft day off. Called to report for an evening DH to ferry a plane back to CVG. Scheduled to arrive at 1240am.

I understand if it's scheduled to end before midnight, and goes up to 2am due to irreg ops that it still is considered same day. However, this would be an contract violation if accepted as scheduled. Now, if at the time of being notified they flat out said they were jr manning me into the soft day, it would be ok. Correct?

I politely pointed this out without using the "jr man" words and she came back after checking and said yes and was taking it off my line. I know it sounds all good....but I just wanted reassurance. I know the duty limits go up to scheduled 13:30, but it would only be 12 if the next day is a day off and they weren't using jr man......???????

Sorry if that was all over the place....thoughts are just coming to me....

What do some guys do? I've pointed out 3 illegal trips since I've been here, even though I wanted to fly, because I know if we don't, it could lead to more. Do you point them out or take them?

Whatever you do Just dont knowingly break the FARs...remember even if the company gets fined you are at risk too, I guess the companies policy is if you dont like it you can Grieve it later

Oh no, it was not against any regs. Scheduling was very nice about it too, I asked, she checked and said "oh no, that's not right, I'll take it off your line." I offered to do anything else they had at the time and she said nothing was in open time right now. I was just wondering how often pilots take illegal (in the sense of contract, not FARs) assignments a)knowingly and grieve it later b) knowingly because they want to fly and don't care.

One other question as well. If we get an assignment and we're not sure if it's legal, is there a union rep oncall who we can get advice from before we have to report or query scheduling? What does the status rep do?

I believe the only time you can grieve it would be if you accepted it under protest.

If you would have indeed accepted the assignment knowing it was illegal you would not be able to grieve it unless you brought it to the attention of scheduling and a chief pilot and they forced you to fly in anyways.

If you would have accepted it knowing it was illegal and never brought it to anyones attention it sets precedent for the company to argue later grievances with other pilots. So make sure you verify your assignments are FAR legal and contract legal when you accept them or it may screw fellow pilots later.

The Union reps numbers are on the ALPA website and they are very good at accepting and returning your calls quickly. The reps will verify that the assignment is illegal and get it touch with scheduling to remedy the situation. Or get the chief pilot to say on the recorded line that they are forcing you to fly the assignment under protest. Giving you grounds to grieve it later. They will help you through the entire process and most of the time the grieving pilot doesnt even have to show up to any of the meetings.

You aren't really Junior Manned into a soft day (unless it is a locked soft day). The soft day can be moved (once) and then they could assign you the trip. However, you would have to be the only person available to do the trip in order for them to move the soft day and have you do the trip.

There was probably a more senior A6 who had an extra day of availability and thus they should have gotten the assignment anyway. Always question and point out assignments that don't look right or seem illegal. We have to look out for ourselves as the turnover rate in scheduling has been high.

I called a union rep for an illegal junior manning once, and he never got back to me. I waited a week and emailed him...still nothing. I finaly got what I wanted by just talking to the chief pilot myself.

best advice i can give read your contract and dont just scan it over briefly

read it cover to cover
there no reason that i should have to tell people whats legal and whats not

it amazes me how some people call and request illegal trips on a daily bases

cheers

All 70/90 FOs, beware junior manning has already started today. Just got woke up with my voice mail going off asking me to call scheduling that they "are in a junior manning situation, please call." Haha yeah right. fix staffing
