There are about 1100 pilots flying the line. This number will be reduced to 500 pilots (again... approximate). This means that 600 pilots are going to be asked to vote yes to a pay cut for the 7 to 18 months that they remain employees. Why would these people do this? They are losing their jobs anyway.
.
I am not qualified as an evil airline executive, so I might be out to lunch here, but I think the theory goes something like this: Management announces these draconian personnel cuts and then comes back and says something like "Gee if you guys would just take a 20% pay-cut we might be able to come up with a plan B which would allow us to minimize the furloughs."
Don't buy it - management will do whatever they want anyway.
Scoop
On a brighter note you won't have to worry about that for long.

The only way they're going to make pilot labor costs "competitive", assuming they aren't, is by offering a serious buyout package to senior professionals...not the silly "one week of pay for every year of service" deal they came up with a couple of years ago.
Otherwise every pilot at the end of the two year draw down will be at top pay scale wage. Seems like a great way to deal with "block hours costs 20% higher than the competition".
No concessions. The company hasn't been worth working for for some time now.

I'm just amazed that anyone can operate a CRJ for $730! The engine maintenance on this aircraft is around $500-600 an hour. So that means you split $130-230 an hour between the three crew members, the ramp crew that works the plane, and everything else needed to operate a flight? Then think of the fuel costs...which I guess is picked up by D.
Although pilot wages are a factor...in terms of business...it's a drop in the bucket. Everyone looks at the bottom of our payscale and thinks we all get paid 20/hr but our most junior FO must be on 3 year pay now. I don't know the facts on that but suspect I am really close...
Anyhow...just a thought for people trying to consider cost per airline...
Chao!!!
