I see what you are saying. I am not saying that you shouldn't be represented. By all means you should be, and you are. I am just trying to help some of the junior guys realize why certain things may be given higher priorities than others. (all my opinion, right or wrong) Also though, look at the make up of ALPA volunteers.... The majority of them are guys that have been here over 4 or 5 years. If more junior guys would get involved, then maybe the more junior view would be heard. More guys in the 2-4 year mark. Look at what's going on in JFK right now. Nobody is stepping up to the plate to volunteer.

So it does all come down to money. The junior guys and those still on probation have not donated much to the ALPA lunch fund, so they get less consideration than those who have spent thousands on ALPA.
Basically, it comes down to the fact that the senior guys run the chapter, and have spent a lot of time and money helping the place out. They now must use their resources to benefit themselves the most (5 day pairings, scheduling software, etc.). The soon-to-be-furloughed employees do not contribute to ALPA much at all, so they should not receive much. The mentality exists that "We were once furloughed and on strike, so you must too in order to gain the full respect of the situation."
But, those junior guys who are currently being forgotten about will not forget. Those who survive will remember down the line how ALPA was not there to help them out.
I hope I'm wrong, I truely do.
Am I out of line here? fire away

Please don't make this a junior guys vs. senior guys deal. They built the airline and they have been around putting up with stuff years before we set foot on the property. What I'm more interested in is the memo from MP vs. the email from our MEC. According to the MEC, voluntary furloughs must be offered along with colas before involuntary. So why MP has stated that a senior buyout or voluntary furlough is just rumor is beyond my little pee brain comprehension here.
Also, what are the penalties for managment violations of the contract? Do we have any recourse if guys are put out on the street before a voluntary furlough is negotiated?
Things to make you go hmmmmm...

When you say MP, I assume you mean RP? MP has been gone for quite some time now.
I see what you're saying about the company required by the contract to offer COLAs and voluntary furloughs and senior buyouts. But, history shows that the company doesn't exactly follow the contract.

To the junior guys worrying about getting fuloughed and feeling betrayed by ALPA. You haven't been around long enough yet to feel the effects of how bad this company will rape you if you let it. The average joe here has been through the ringer and has most likely endoured a pretty painful strike to get some of the protections that we now have. Those guys are probably pretty concerned about giving up what they fought so hard for. Talk about unity, pilots were helping other pilots put food on their tables. To just lay down and give up everything that they have fought so hard for would be silly. Unfortunately you are directly feeling the pressure of how these politics work. Again, I don't want to see anyone out of a job, but the reality is that a few of you are going to have to take a short break.
Chances are that the majority of those about to be furloughed are still on probation. You are definitely represented, however you are at the bottom of priority list therefor you can't expect the union to drop everything they are working on to give all of their attention to you.
It's unfortunate, but in a seniority based system that is how the cookie crumbles. And remember, we were all on probation and we were all in the same danger you are in now at some point while being employed here.

We all pay union dues “except for pilots of probation” and we all should expect the union to protect our jobs. The union is putting minor issues ahead of more important issues. I know that most senior guys could care less about long call reserve language, and e-maestro. Wake up my friend. A lot of pilots are about to lose their jobs and will not be able to put food on the table. How would like to face your kids and tell them that you lost your job because the union does not want to do anything to protect my job tell they resolve the issues with e-maestro. Mybe you need to lose your job and see how it feels.

Also, with the COLAs, how did you guys count 10? I'm counting 50 COLAs offered.

I just hope that you guys that are on the fence right now have made plans. You have had plenty of warning to come up with plan B. Hopefully you don't need it, but if you do then you shouldn't be on these boards crying if it happens. Those that were furloughed before didn't have any time to secure other jobs. I think they got a half a day notice that fuloughs were coming and then received a letter. And yes, during that time I helped my unfortunate friends.
A few of you have said that you feel betrayed by the MEC, have you walked into the MEC's office and asked why they are betraying you? Have you walked in there and asked why you aren't being represented? Have you asked them why they are fighting petty issues? Voicing your opinion on this message board doesn't count.

I am real! I also almost lost my job. I was barely missed with furloughs before, so don't preach to me about the downfalls about being on the fence. Talk about pools, when I was hired, we had to wait 1 full year for a class date. Also, do your research. The things that the union is fighting right now are not small problems and they not only affect them, but even the junior guys. In my opinion the junior guys should feel fortunate that they have someone representing them for FREE.

With all due respect I disagree completely. First off, some of these junior guys on the fence are beginning year two, So they are paying. For the Association to look out for them.
Secondly, the first year guys who are being represented, they aren't being represented for free. Assuming we go back to hiring, they will pay the association back LOTS of money. I see this as a way for the union to not loose support later on. By helping out the junior guys for "free" they are just ensuring that they will have a favorable image later on.
Third and lastly, A unions primary job is to help preserve jobs. I agree with them that this Emastro thing sucks and wasn't implemented correctly or in good faith. That said, the union needs to re prioritize. Jobs need to be their most important issue, followed by everything else
