$25 to fly any aircraft at any year's pay at the mainline level is ridiculous! Are the EMB-drivers really flying for that?? What a slap in the face That's a sell-out!!

PF: Set thrust, gear up, flaps up, climb power, 10,000 feet, 29.92's, direct XXX, 1,000 to go, 100 to go, cruise power, cross XXX at FL240, brief landing, in range check, flaps 9, flaps 22, gear down, yaw damper off, land.

or PNF: Cleared to go, contact dep, climb to 15,000, climb to FL230, contact the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, descend to FL190, cross XXX at 11,000 at 250knots, contact approach, "we've got Juliet", turn here, turn there, contact tower, cleared to land.

Done! Just repeat a few thousand times and enjoy the hotels.

Or how about this life...

Get up, get shower, brush teeth, get dressed, TRY to eat breakfast, sit in traffic, walk to train, sit on train, walk to work, get to work, get coffee, sit down in cubicle, sit down in cubicle, sit down in cubicle... wait you are still sitting down in the cubicle. listen to the gossip/politics goin on around you.. hear about how your job can be outsourced to India if they wanted to, deal with the co worker that doesn't do any work and pawns it off on you, and makes more money than you... deal with the CEO's kid or relative that is dumber than a brick despite his fully paid for education, watch them move up around you to higher positions because of their last name, while you remain the same, and sit in the cubicle... wait that 23 year old got a corner office now? Yup you are still in the cubicle. Time to go home yet? finally. walk to train, sit on train, walk to car, sit in traffic, walk to house, sit down fighting the urge to pass out... argue with the wife b/c you are ****y and miserable from the day… go to bed, get up, repeat. 5 days a week every week. Only 1 - 4 day weekend per year (thanks giving). 99% of the rest of the time, its 5 on, 2 off. Oh, don't let me forget about the select favorites that get work from home privileges, when you don't or wont... Despite the fact that you BUILT THE FKN VPN.

When they hit 2nd year pay, they'll be making over $85 bucks an hour. 2nd year A320 FOs will make $75+ an hour, and the 737 drivers will make a little more. Some of the reserve guys who commute can sit at home most of the month because of long call. Everyone is long call, but can be converted to short call 6 times a month.

There are a few of the bright sides to the industry. I won't get into the uglys, as many on here are already familar. This industry can be tough, but also rewarding. It all depends on the indvidual, and their life. Think long and hard before leaving. The grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side.
Not to be a downer but I was attempting to do a reality check. The fact that someone is still considering getting into this profession with a family and kids off all things, is missing something. Not all of us will be Delta FOs anytime soon, which even then pay is not nearly enough. You can make 50-85k per year easily on other professions especially if you have a degree.

He is going to start flight training, that will cost 40-50K, I'd use that money for an MBA or your kids college fund.

Trust me, that is much better than what you will experience as a pro pilot. And when you say 5 on 2 off, it's really kind of 2 on and 5 off because on those on days you're only at work 8 hours x 5 = 40 hours so it's more like 40 hours on and 146 hours off per week.

Compare that with 144 hours on and 30 hours off as an airine pilot? Notice I took some time off on on the off hour. That is because you will probably commute and that will take off AT LEAST 12 hours off of your off time. And this is a senioir guy. If you don't have much senioirty, you might get tuesday and wendsay off, when it would do you no good. Please.... enjoy your job, nothing to see here.. If you're in it for the coolnese, go rent a 172 at the local ap, same sensations without the BS.

OK, here is the analogy as relates airline flying:

Get up, get shower, brush teeth, get dressed, do not eat breakfast (because the hotel doesn't have continental breakfast, or you are leaving too early that it isn't put out yet). Get to airport, go through airport security, put jacket back on, belt back on, reassemble baggage trailer. Get into airplane. Listen to gossip/politics going on at the company and the industry as a whole, hear about how your job is going to be outsourced or just eliminated altogether.

...deal with the co worker that doesn't do any work and pawns it off on you, and makes more money than you... deal with the CEO's kid or relative that is dumber than a brick despite his fully paid for education, watch them move up around you to higher positions because of their last name, while you remain the same, and sit in the cubicle... wait that 23 year old got a corner office now? deal with the captain that makes more money than you, hold your breath for the seniority to move, but it doesn't. You cannot work your way into a higher position. The conga line moves when it moves. Still in the RJ? Damn. Time to go home yet? No, 4 more days to go.

finally. walk to train, sit on train, walk to car, sit in traffic, walk to house, sit down fighting the urge to pass out... argue with the wife b/c you are ****y and miserable from the day… go to bed, get up, repeat. 5 days a week every week. Finally back to domicile. Sit at airport for 3 hours waiting for commute flight to leave, walk to gate, get on the airplane LAST, cram between 2 fat ladies in seat 22B, listen to screaming kids all excited about disney world while your seat is kicked for 2 solid hours by the kid behind you. Rule of commuting: The guy in front of you, no matter where you sit, will recline his seat back. Get home, argue with wife because you are ****y and miserable from the last 4 days. Go to bed, wake up, do house chores, mow the lawn, go to the bank, pay the bills, do your bid, plan your next commute. YOU WILL NEVER WORK FROM HOME, impossible in this business.

Sorry man, the argument doesn't hold up.

As is the life of most people I know working in non-aviation jobs. 8-10+ hrs a day, 5-6 days a week, constantly the same routine everyday, with not much outlook for promotion/ advancement, and making no more than an RJ captain, in some cases, no more than a 2nd year regional FO. To each his own, but the grass is NOT always greener ... not even close.

What is the difference between a regional captain making $70K/year and enjoying their job, and someone being an accountant, or some other job, making the same $70K. Sure airline flying is a different life style, but for some, it is a life style they enjoy. I think people go overboard with all of this pay stuff. If you really look at the salaries that an average pilot is making, it isn't any different than the non-aviation jobs that are out there. I get tired of this BS that seems to imply that pilots make peanuts their whole career. I know plenty of people who would kill just to make the salary that an RJ captain makes. According to ALPA, the average RJ captain with 5 years longevity makes just over $70K/year, compared to the average american, who makes $40K. Could pay be better? Yes. Is it THAT bad? No. First year pay, is first year pay, and yes, it sucks, but it does get better. You have to start somewhere, and that is the case in no matter what career you look at.

To each his own, but I know plenty of happy pilots, and plenty of people miserable in their non-aviation jobs. It goes both ways.

I respect your reality check. But there are very few professions, let alone jobs where you will make $50-$85K 1st and 2nd year. If you believe that you may want to give yourself a reality check.

I strongly doubt the nay sayers ever worked in an office job before... 5 day work weeks plain suck. The negative people fail to count the time for commuting / overtime / whatever as well when making numbers up for a 9 to 5er... I don't see how you say that you only get 30 hours off per week either... Here is the schedule of a regional FO I know thats only been working at the airline for less than 1 year...

15 days off, and home every single night of the week. some WORKdays he can even sleep in! I'm up at 6:30 every damn morning, and always tired. Only get to sleep in 2 days per week, and never can sleep past 7:30am anyway because of being used to forcing myself out of bed EVERY weekday.

I still don't see any validity in your arguments either... no offense, but I'm just trying state my case here...

I honestly think (like the other guy said) that the people that whine never worked in a real job (aside from aviation) before...
