Letter from MEC Jumpseat Committee, July 8, 2008

>>>>>I don't see a FOOLPROOF way to fix this short of fixing the software. It was changed at the UAL MEC's request.
Change it again.<<<<
I'm sorry, but that is absolute crap.
You all keep believing that so you can justify dragging the commuting pilots of UA into this.

The solution is so simple, can't believe ALPA hasn't stated the obvious: The UAL pilots should not take a JS out of the correct order. The pilots should standing in the gate area can figure it out. Geez Lillian, It really is that simple.
Whoever said this is a management wet dream is correct. Laughing like h#ll at all of us.
BTW, anybody except scabs are welcome on my flight.

Salty,
That pretty well covers it.
After commuting for 13 years, that is how I've always seen it done.
Any UA pilot that "takes" the jumpseat when it is not his should be strung up and flogged.

then start flogging guppy.......had a UAL jumpseater tell my CA AFTER we were airborne "whew.... glad that shuttle fo didnt see me get the jumpseat......".... it was a 23 minute turn in ORF... NO way we could check the gate area.....the CA went ballistic... the JSer bowed up and insinuated that the planes said UNITED Express...not shuttle america on them... and he would take the JS when ever he had to over anybody.....NOW that said... Im sure that douche is an exception.... but the result was probably a shuttle pilot who didnt make his commute because of some selfish sob.
Personally I think the answer is for ALL UAX and UAL pilots to man up and work it out at the gate ....... problem is some guys are just selfish b astards. Putting the CA in the position of having to check when a JSr presents himself.... and there in lie the rub... MANY times the gate wont send a JSr down until the very last minute.... ie.... CAs not running to the gate to check....
This to will work itself out..... my only real complaint is the substandard regard UAX pilots get... in that if UAL guys were the brunt of this U can bet they would raise the dead to make UAL do something... but who said life was fair....

Grow some stones? But don't do it in a manner that inconvienances you guys. I can only imagine the hell that would come down on a regional guy that flips his lid when the JS is given away to someone it SHOULDN'T be.
You guys really are completely out of touch with the reality of how your regional carriers operate. It's so simple...I'll just tell the gate agent she's wrong and walk on down the jet way to talk to the Captain! It's nice to see we've finally got your attention. Until my union tells me otherwise, I will abide by the letter and it's intentions and hope that whoever I'm flying with does the same.

Which is "crap"? That there is no foolproof fix short of a software change, or that the UAL MEC requested the original change ? Or both?
I commute, too. I don't plan on changing that any time soon. If UAL pilots follow through with their MEC's plan, it will probably get more difficult for me. Obviously it may for you also, on Aug 1.
The issue still needs to be fixed. I personally don't care what the background is. Fix it. Soon. For you, and all UAL pilots, and for all of us.
Just saying it's tough, or difficult, or costs money... don't cut it. If we can move toward the fix, there won't be a JS issue.
Here's a simple one for you. Just answer this one question. What can any of my fellow SkyWest pilots do to fix the problem on our end ? There's plenty of suggestions, and many have a glimmer of hope, and may be good stop gap measures.
But what can we do to securely fix it ?

Wish I would have taken down the name of the captain that did this to me one day. It was on one of OUR flights, and I made it VERY clear to this guy what was going on, and pretty much he told me to pound sand. Gate agent wouldn't call the captain or let me down the jetway, and I didn't have the cell phone numbers of the crew members working the flight. In fact it seemed this guy took some sort of pleasure acing me out of my own jumpseat. So, sorry to say, the arguement about not letting the gate agent decide the jumpseat doesn't carry any weight with me. Fix the software.

Not only get the offenders name, let the JS Folks know the details of what happened. Easier for the JS coordinators to resolve between each other.
Why let the clear minority of UAL pilots control the jumpseats for the absolute clear majority across a big chunk of the industry. Managements at each airline will clearly enjoy the fallout of a JS war. No business argument beats pilots kicking other pilots to make management crow in spite of themselves. Cool heads need to think this one before a few blow this up badly.
