Aight then. Next time I fly with someone into an airport after the tower closes, on short final with the runway lights still off, I'm gonna clap my hands twice really loud and......voila! the runway lights appear.
I'm not gonna tell you I really clicked the mic 5 times on the tower/unicom freq, because that would be educating you......I'm not gonna say anything so you look like an ass for your next CA when you randomly clap your hands on short final at night.
yes I have flown with guys who had never heard of turning on your own rwy lights....

I'm gonna chime in and make a statement here...

Maybe instead of responding to an immature/frustrated person calling someone an ass by taking on the role of the strict school teacher, let's assume the role of a mentor... "FO: He was being an Ass" | "CA: *look funny at FO* Where did that come from? -or- Get enough sleep last night?". Find out what was going on, if the guy had just gotten off his phone with his wife who just told him she wanted a divorce wouldn't you be a little ****y and thing everyone is an ass too?

Since you are the captain it is required that you act like one, and don't do that by taking on the role of the lazy instructor by giving the guy a generic copy of the AIM, challenge him on his phrasing to ATC and if he argues about it I'd tell him: "Well, let's finish this discussion when we cruise it out... I got a copy of the AIM in my flight bag that can figure out who's buying beer on the next overnight".

I don't know... just my two cents on the approach to these sorts of situations.

There seems to be a lot of "missing the point" here. The original post was not really complaining about the FO's lack of knowledge when it comes to atc procedures. He was saying how the FO was rude and inconsiderate to the atc guy on the other end of the transmission. It does not matter if he was an FO or a captain, or a guy flying single pilot freight. We are PROFESSIONAL pilots, and should act in a professional manner. This professionalism should be carried over into our radio transmissions. Does the atc guy deserve to be yelled at or rudly spoken to? No, he is a professional, doing his job, and expects the same in return. If you have a misunderstanding, ask. ATC is very helpful if you treat them with respect. If you can't handle being a professional on the radio, maybe you are too immature to be flying passengers around.

Yes, I agree. My opinion to be added to this post was completely about trying to not divide the cockpit and assumptions on one side or the other is never a good thing in a CRM environment.

JPOH -

If this was a response to crewdawg's post - then it is evident that you don't understand the nature of fighter debriefs. Egos are checked at the door and professionalism expects that you debrief someone senior or more experienced in the same manner that you debrief a true student. Also - it is no secret who you will be telling your story to if things go wrong. the only question is how far up the ladder you will be going.

Also regarding the guy sitting in ATC... probably thought the same thing about the FO the FO was thinking about him... IMHO your job as the captain is not to create a situation out of what said ass/unprofessional/amateur did but rather to work to prevent it from happening again. Where does fault for the lack of knowledge and god given right attitudes amongst 0-hero and other pilots lie? Lack of Training? Rushed hiring? Self entitlement? Living off parents money? Living off Ramen noodles? Not ready for the job? Busted down to CRJ FO from 757 CA? Depending on the person and their personality it's going to be a combination of these and more, someone who can practice good CRM can deal with this. You as a CA should not focus on illustrating the deficiencies of your crew but on actually commanding the darn plane/crew, that's what the in-Command in PIC is (partially) referring to, challenge your crew to bring it to the next level, don't give them a piece of literature for homework, they will resent you for it, I would have immediately noticed that someone with the personality you describe would have thrown the AIM you gave him away and told everyone else a story about how you were being the ass, that is not the outcome I'd be trying for, since we both end up being asses in each others eyes.
