no matter how people feel one way or the other about the ATP requirement... I think we can all agree on the fact that this new law coupled with the massive pilot shortage (which was front page news on yesterday's USA Today) will do wonders to our wallets...

Well put man. To add to your comment. People are getting so short sighted. It's this instant gratification. I want it and need it now. If it weren't for that, people would see the good in this whole thing. I myself don't want to die, or leave behind a horrible life having killed an airplane full of people.
It's not just tooling around getting 1500hrs to obtain an ATP. It's the level of maturity you get to while doing so. It's not a perfect system or idea, but the best one yet. Since we as humans aren't responsible enough to admit when we aren't fit for the job, unfortunately the gov. has to. Never pretty but we as pilots have lowered the bar to a new low and now need someone to hold our hand. Pretty sad, but it may help until people start doing the right thing one day again.
The pilots in the colgan crash may have benefited from this rule. Sure, the F.O. flight instructed for a bit. But it was the Captain that really screwed the pooch. And he was HIRED with low time. Had he had to obtain an ATP BEFORE getting hired, he probably would have washed out. We all know the type. Should have never become a pilot. Just my opinion.

Not even to flaps 20 which you probably took off with?

never underestimate Washington's ability to do wonders to your wallet. I see many an exemption going into place before the dusts settles.

Being a check airman and actually having the pleasure of "training" some of the low time wonders I am very glad that we have something; although it is not perfect. When I was doing OE for these pilots I found myself going back to my flight instructor days and actually teaching basic aerodynamic principles instead of items that relate to the specific airplane.
This is not going to be a perfect solution but it is a step in the right direction.

I agree. You will see through the use of exemptions, that nothing will change. You will still have teh same low time guys coming in, only now you will HAVE to go to a pilot assembly line school like Riddle to get in. Which is what the big schools want. Monopoly on airline training.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the chief pilot's office when that carpet dance takes place......

that's what i'm trying to ask here, since so many are complaining being low-time is unsafe.....
