The CRJ is not bigger than the ERJ by a whole lot. You can't really tell the difference I guess unless you fly the CRJ900, that probably does feel different. And where it matters, in the cockpit, the ERJ is definitely better.
As far as a great starter, both the ERJ and CRJ were designed for low time pilots. So you can't go wrong either way. I find that the ERJ was a lot more fun to fly because the wing is a little more efficient, I think, than the CRJ. It was very maneuverable. For example, you can land an ERJ with just two flap settings vs the 4 to 5 on the CRJ. The CRJ however has a better EFIS system, a little more practical than the ERJs although anything the CRJ can do the ERJ can as well. Plus the ERJ does not have a set standard FMS like the CRJ does which was very annoying having to learn the different boxes. As far as the systems are basically the same, they were designed for low time pilots so there's nothing really to do other than to place switches in the auto position.

What the hell, I'll refute some of the necrothread bumpage...
The CRJ has a cabin that is 1.4 FEET wider than the E145 cabin. I flew the CRJ and am probably biased but I prefer its 2x2 arrangement to the ERJ's 1x2 arrangement...the single-seat side loses too much foot room due to the roll of the smaller cabin. I also preferred the CRJ jumpseat to that of the ERJ and the CRJ cockpit is quiet compared to the ERJ.
ERJ does not have a "banana" (forget its real name) to show where you'll be on a climb or descent when you hit the selected altitude.
And RJs weren't designed to be flown by low-time pilots...they were designed with simple, automated systems to reduce pilot workload which improves safety. Like every airplane designed since ergonomics and human factors have been studied has been designed.

LOL....this is funny. I have to help it keep going. Hehehe
ERJ- great pax seats and windows. The worst cabin height in the world though. Up front, don't really like anything, especially the yoke. (simply stupid)
CRJ- Like the Flt Deck and ease of operations. EICAS system is sweet.
328- Dumb idea all around. It was never designed to have anything other than turboprops hanging off it. Needed a reduced thrust (flex) engine program. But damn, did it climb like a bat outta hell!!!!
