Never once has someone stopped me and said, "hey, ahh your roller board, it's a little beat up, are you sure you know how to fly a plane?" or "Hey your back pack, ahhh you know pilots don't carry backpacks?" the general public care for themselves and really don't care otherwise. Think about it the next time you don't let someone cross the street at a crosswalk because you are too lazy to stop or next time you don't hold the door for someone, why most likely you weren't thinking because you were two concerned with other things in your life. Everyone falls victim to it. And if people are concerned about a backpack or maybe an ear bud, maybe they should be concerned about what happens when the door is closed? Not being sterile below 10,000 feet? 8 hours of looking out the window, without someone opening up a newspaper? Or a sudoku? Maybe missing a taxiway because you didn't copy the instructions down? We are all victim too it.
This is a comical subject and each one of you who argues that looking professional is clueless. The people DO care that the people flying their airplanes look professional. It doesn't have to be a uniform but they would surely lose business if people showed up looking unprepared, dirty clothes and bed head. Should people in offices not wear suits to meetings? Should the military not be required to wear a uniform when they aren't actively in combat? Perhaps you'd be okay if your doctor came in looking hungover in a dirty coat with pj pants underneath. You are all only whining because it impacts you. Clean your uniform, take a shower, and just do your job that you signed on the dotted line to do. If you don't like it, quit. Please.

I make about that now but still take the time to dry clean my pants and iron my shirts. Its about how you feel about yourself not about how you feel about your company. Do you think people around the airport that see you think "oh this guys company must be robbing him blind judging from the way he looks". No, they are judging you. They are saying to themselves "what ever happened to this once prestigious profession, these guys all look homeless now."

All this achieves in the public eye is to make it look like we really do not deserve the wage we think we should be getting. It really does destroy the confidence of passengers. I don't get it why people agree to make 1600 a month by agreeing to do a job and then whine about it and disgrace the profession by looking like a slob. Why did you want to get into this line of work in the first place?

It has gone down the tubes! Im not a regional pilot but I have many friends and former co-workers that are. Its sad that for the last decade or so most of them are still First officers making the same poverty wages, Or junior Captains making salaries that have been shrinking over the last decade. I hope the regional pilot's that are voting on new TA's vote NO and do not allow the contracts to get worse. The sad thing is that most of the regional FO's are homeless. You can't really afford a mortgage payment on 20-30k/year…. Vote no and call management's bluff. You deserve more than you are getting.

My favorite was the Pinnacle pilot wearing jeans because he lost his pants on an overnight.

I don't even want to know how he lost his pants.

I will however add that I think it is important to also dress to the aircraft you are flying. Just my opinion that a nice leather jacket with epaulets and a name tag is highly appropriate and stylish for a turbo prop. A dinner jacket and hat is highly appropriate for a jet. And if your flying a Tomohawk than you should be wearing shorts and a tee shirt and not a nice airline pilot uniform.

If I am catching a ride on a Twin Otter on floats in the Caribbean I expect my pilot to be barefoot with a Hawaiian shirt.

Pants freshly pressed, hair neatly combed, I walk through security towards my plane 30 gates away. A flustered passenger locks eyes with me and with heat seeking precision, engages me in conversation.

"Hey where is the Chilis at!?"

I'm sorry sir I'm not quite sure

"MY flight leaves IN 40 MINUTES!, UHG airlines are USELESS" *person stomps away*

This is why we get paid the big bucks to look sharp everyday right?

*ear buds in*

I don't think we will be taking a pay cut anytime soon. The last offer was rejected by the pilots. I'm excited to see what will happen here. For my situation its a great job. To each their own.
