When I was a ramper I was wary of the coworkers with the clean, nice looking uniforms. My experience was that those were the people who attempted to do as little as possible. This was typically a correct hypothesis.
On that note, I feel that a lack of quality of appearance is not a 'regional' or 'major' issue, but a reflection of society as a whole. 'Anything goes' with no standard of public appearance/conduct has become all too commonplace.

From: Home with my family playing with my daughter as much as possible
Been there, done that... Up to 7 legs a day. Made sure I looked sharp still.
Just kidding...as former Air Force, I love my sharp uniform. But it is very difficult to keep a fresh pair of pants looking fresh after such long days. That's all my point was...wasn't saying it was an excuse for looking sloppy. Hope that clears things up.

My family uses the flight benefits a lot and they're always telling me they see dirty pilots. Of course my family knows how much we really make but passengers in general still look at your appearance. Remember they don't know or don't care that you're on your 5th day and on your 5th leg, you are their pilot and they expect you to look sharp.

I lol'd at this thread.
But seriously, walk thru CLT, some of those mainline Cactus guys are the worst. And I've seen the Velcro shoes, on a mainline UsAir guy. I actually stopped and stared.
Fat pilots bother me more, but oh well. Especially the young fat ones.

My last job I was required by company to purchase crew outfitters $55 pants. Dry clean only of course. In my 12 months with the company, I made less than $1000 in 4 different months. We were given a $50 uniform stipend after twelve months to replace any part of our uniform. I wore that $55 pair of pants every day I worked for that company and washed them... Maybe 5 times. I looked like a homeless person and I didn't care. I'm at a new job now and they treat me with respect. I will be coming to work, everyday with clean shirt and pants.
As mentioned earlier I dressed on the outside how I felt on the inside and honestly I felt like hell everyday I had to put on those wings for that specific company. I'm suppose to dress like a millionaire and eat Raman? Give me a break. I left the company to remove myself from that environment and I'm exponentially happier with the new gig.

I iron just about every day and keep a lint roller in the bag as well but no matter how nice the uniform looks I'm beyond beat on what's lately been 6-8 days on the road. Nothing fixes the look of fatigue not even 117.

Pilots who sound like arrogant self absorbed dicks bother me more. Especially the young skinny ones.
