I'm going to just count making my own dinner at my own home twice a month as 'volunteered in the soup kitchen'.

It all went downhill when "Human Resources" having so much say in the hiring process became a thing. Get those clowns out of the picture, and we'd only be better off for it.
Not going to pretend to understand your particular situation, but I too found myself in your exact predicament, family, reserve Capt., little time, and commuting, and made sure to volunteer. It is life changing and wonderful when shared with the kids. I, however, did not do it to land the job, rather as a desire to overcome my selfishishness, it helps. Good luck and I agree some of the best service is being a better mother/father.

The problem is that image is more important than substance to most airlines.

Given your time available here's an idea: Most food banks require drivers to go to the supermarkets to pick up their "donations". It doesn't take a lot of time and you can take the kids with you.

You only have to do it once a week/month or whatever you have time for. Believe me, I'm with you on the B.S. that is the "community service" requirement. The fact of the matter is if you want to work at certain airlines its just that...a REQUIREMENT.

Long ago and far, far away, airlines required 20/20 vision or a 737 type rating to get an interview, much less a job. Those requirements were just as B.S. as community service, but served to "cull the herd."

If you want the job, you have to jump through the hoop. Sorry.

Except that both of those old requirements actually have an impact of flying. Is 20/20 extreme? Maybe but vision is kind of critical. 737 type rating? Speaks to your flying ability and trainability. Volunteering means squat in respect to flying. It's a feel good metric for HR. You have people who don't/can't do our job trying to find some way to relate to our resume. They are trying to find some cross over point so they can't adequately evaluate us as potential employees. Too bad I'm not trying to get a food bank delivery job, be a big brother or a church nursery job. I'm trying to be pilot.

The majors want leadership. Any monkey can fly a plane. But not everyone has a degree, and not many are good leaders. Some only want to be pilots, and that is fine. But the powers that be want someone who can go above and beyond that.

Nothing wrong with community service.... I've done a few of these projects over the last few years and they were all worthwhile; I've learned a lot from them. If you can't give an hour a week away in exchange for playing XBOX, then maybe you do suck as a human being.

I can only answer this based on the policies of one food bank. They give you an ID to show at the supermarket when you pick up the donations. I suppose you could use that as your documentation.

Perhaps by calling a reference from the organization you volunteered at?

The volunteering thing is complete BS.

I'm thankful to have got on at my end-airline before any of this feel good BS made it into the industry.

I remember back in my Skywest days flying 4 X 4 day trips a month, getting home totally exhausted on the end of the 4th day.... Sure I had time and energy to go build houses for poor people and sure that would have made me a better person and pilot than spending my 3 days off between trips with my friends and family... Suuuure

Spending your off time with your friends and family is far more important than anything else.
