Scenario
Finished trip and assigned 24 hour break. During break company calls and I don't answer (dont have to). When I come back on duty at 11am company says I have short call at 3pm. Aren't we required 12 hours heads up for short call or trip assignment?
ALPAs position is that even during the break I am contactable, but just not required to answer the phone but still obligated to the contractual 12 hour heads up.
I thought I was free from ALL duty during a 24 hour break? If they wanted me to fly a trip or start short call on returning to duty they had to assign it to me before the start of my break. Any takers?
Think of it this way - the 24 hr off is just like your last X-day. You don't have to answer the phone, but you still have the same responsibilities for checking your schedule. I think it is covered in "What to do When Scheduling Calls":
For a non-fl y day that does not end at midnight, e.g., Pay Back (PB)
day or Partial Reserve (PR) day, the deadline for placement on the
schedule is 9 hours prior to end of the day, and the deadline for the
schedule check is 2 hours following the end of the day. The earliest
that a pilot may be required to report for a rotation or start short call
is 5 hours following the end of the day. He may be assigned to begin
rest immediately following the end of the non-fl y day.
The last non-fl y day check is not required on a day in which the pilot:
a. Is on vacation.
b. Performs, or is scheduled to perform, flying for the company.
c. Participates in training, including travel days.
d. Is removed from his scheduled rotation for company
convenience.
e. Is on company business.
f. Performs an SLI duty period, including a flex day.
If they don't call before that 9 hour mark, then the 12 hour clock starts at the end of the 24 hr off. If you ended your 24 hr at 11, then the SC should be no earlier than 4, which is 5 hr after the end of the 24.
