At least when I took my first sip, the airline was growing and things were looking great. Now not so much.

Quote: What was the issue with RPA losing the MIA flying back to Envoy? IIRC it was something about their planes and being able to fly over water? Is RPA even able to handle more flying anyway, seems like every regional is losing pilots at rate greater than it can replace them.
Delta started to use RPA to fly from Miami to several other cities to support its LATAM JV. Not long after that, AA gave RPA's Miami flying to Envoy. The rumor was that AA's plan was to spoil the RPA base and thus thwart the Delta operation from MIA.

This is why YX lost their MIA base. It makes more sense for them to be at hubs with DL/UA presence and not MIA. They might do fly-through like they do in CLT, but like CLT I doubt it will be a base again.

As for our 170s, they are indeed EOW certified and I’m guessing most if not all of the 175s will be too.

Speaking of which, AA signed a lease on another 170, which I believe makes 9 for Envoy. MSN 17000024, former Aeromexico and LOT.

Been a while since I’ve seen a 175 that wasn’t EOW, but the last 170 was definitely not EOW. Not saying it won’t be, just like there might still be a few 175s that haven’t been done yet either.

What do you consider a “presence” for a carrier? RPA has a bunch of domiciles that are not hubs, as does SKW. Do those non hub locations have a presence from other carriers? I’m pretty sure that DL and UA fly into MIA and CLT which would mean the have presence there. At least as much so than many of the locations they use as domiciles that are not hubs for any carrier.

Quote: Initially Envoy was given a choice between Canadian flying and Caribbean and chose Canada. There was an initial reluctance to have the Envoy 175s EOW certified. It was a dollar consideration, both the initial act and continued cost of equipping and maintaining the life vests as well as the slight weight penalty. The Envoy planes are nearly all EOW equipped after initially just doing 20. I don’t think the 170s have the EOW equipment, but those planes were intended to fly out of ORD. The move of RPA out of MIA was just another shell game of regional flying by AAG. RPA’s presence has increased at ORD and in the NE. Envoy lost NY and was beefed up in MIA.

You are right, nobody can really afford to take on MORE flying. It will be a matter of who shrinks the least and where their flying remains.

But as I said, as things shrink, you can expect to see changes. It’s my bet that closing MIA as an Envoy base would be likely if it were to lose all the 145s without a considerable amount of 170/175s to replace them and their flying. While that has always been the desire, a significant number of additional 175s isn’t something that appears to be happening anytime soon.
Seems like it's impossible to predict what will happen over the next few months, but based on what you say, it doesn't sound like anything good. I wonder what the end game would be for AA with Envoy and PSA and all the planes they have if they keep losing people at a rate faster than they can replace them, especially the instructors and check airmen. Taking a quick glance over at the RPA page, it would appear that while they are experiencing the same issues as everyone else, it seems their retention problems don't seem to the level of seriousness you guys and others are experiencing. And they have ordered those 100 planes, for whatever contract they may be for.

Was this in the 2019 time frame? I seem to remember seeing maybe one or two DL E175s at MIA, but they were rare, and RPA was operating them for AA, Envoy had just brought the base back with only the 145 a year or two earlier. Then maybe late 2019 or early 2020 before covid, RPA left and the Envoy E145s in MIA got replaced by the Envoy E175s.

Sorry for the side track -

If assigned the 175, how long is reserve at each base and once you have a line are they built to be commutable at all? I guess commutability can be ruined either way when they assign additional flying.

There is no real way to guess and historically what has happened is just out the window because things are so dynamic. Plan on three to six months of reserve. But if they throw a 145 class in there and get stuck, it could be forever.

Commuting to reserve is a special kind of he11. Most reserve lines are five on two off with a four on and three off in there someplace. Depending WHERE you are commuting to and from determines how commutable anything is. There are ways to push your first day late and slowly work to an early last day. But depends how the crew schedulers are and what flights you get tagged with.

Remember the days when you would get all hissy at me for pointing out that your optimism is overly optimistic?
