I learned quite a few things about the Y yesterday and today on YouTube. I didn’t realize the standard wheels on the Y have cheap plastic hubcaps that can be popped off to reveal a very nice wheel. I think he spent @$30 instead of $2000 for the performance wheels. I realize it’s for aerodynamic advantages but I watched one guy coat his underlying wheel with black plasti-dip. I have to say, it looked dayum good. He changed the standard puddle lights for some that display Tesla on ground when the door is opened. He did several other interior mods too. I saw a couple that had body wraps applied and they looked very nice too.

Just wait until you find Facebook pages that talk about Teslas and their modifications... It got a little much for me, I just like mine stock. Also, the Buy/Sell pages have lots of wheels available too... people like to switch it up a lot.

I did pop the aero wheels off mine, they look a whole lot better without them. I rarely need the % savings that you get from them.

Quote: I watched Doug’s review of the Mach E and at 6’4” he was praising the backseat. Curious where you thought it was tight or is it in comparison to the model Y? Too bad the fit/alignment is poor. I was kinda rooting for this car. Haven’t seen one in person yet.

I've given up on Doug's reviews. Last time we went shopping for cars we watched a bunch of his reviews and had completely different takeaways than he did.

For EV reviews, I think Bjorn from Norway is probably the best individual on YouTube. He wasn't a fan of the Mach's infotainment. He also didn't like that the steering wheel blocks the edges of the speedometer display. But overall, for the price, he recommended it.

Bjorn Nyland

It's hard to beat Tesla Model 3 or Y though. Ever since they upgraded the auto wipers, my list of major complaints dropped to zero. Plenty of minor complaints remain (like the recently shrunken map and aliased car graphic), but we'll probably get a second Tesla when the time comes to replace vehicle #2.

Obvious Bjorn never flew the -88!

I view Doug the same way I view Top Gear/Grand Tour. It is a comedy show with some information about cars. Definitely not a pure car show.

AutoWeek offers a free weekly email digest called the State of Charge. It’s worth subscribing to if you’re interested in EV’s.

Anyone care to explain how the various public charging systems work?
In particular how the charge gets paid for?
When parking at the airport with charging stations, do you get to plug in for a 4 day trip for free, or do you have an Uber type subscription that automatically charges your credit card?
What about Costco?
Tesla Supercharges used to be free, but has that changed?

there’s a lot to unpack....
if you have a Tesla. You register a credit card on file. Whenever you plug into a Tesla charger it starts automatically, and you are billed automatically. In a word, easy. It is also, REALLY fast.

the following are non-Tesla owned chargers.
if you plug in at current ATL parking, it’s free.
if you plug in at HQ it’s about 50 cents per hour.
they don’t charge as fast, and you can plug any electric car into them.
those you register a credit card on their website and swipe your phone at the stations

Charging 101 dumbed down for APC forums:

Level 1 chargers: standard 120v outlet. Think if it like a trickle charge. You’ll get a couple miles range per hour depending on your vehicle.

Level 2 charger: Typically a 240v of some sort (NEMA 14-50, SAE, Tesla Wall Charger, J1772). Charger much faster. Depending on amperage and your vehicle, somewhere between 10-40 miles ranger per hour

Level 3 charger: CHAdeMO, Combos, DC Fast Charging, Superchargers. Vary as to speed, but overall MUCH faster than Level 2. As an example, I can go from about 10% battery to 80-90% battery in about 20-30 min at a supercharger.

There are a lot of free level 2 charging sites around. Some require an account with the company (ChargePoint for instance), but that doesn’t mean they charge for them at all locations. The Whole Foods near me uses ChargePoint but charging is free.

Many hotels and some restaurants have tesla wall chargers or J1772 chargers that are free.

Supercharging is no longer free for new buyers, but it’s still cheaper than gas. About .20-.30 cents per KWh.

Keep in mind a Tesla can charge at virtually any charger. All others can charge anywhere accept Tesla which has the best network.
