Do you think the ATP rule will affect us much? I was hired when they were running interviews every single day and multiple new hire classes per month and every single person in my new hire class had ATP mins. Only one or two people I interviewed with didn't have ATP mins but they had 1200+. I have a hard time believing it will have a major affect on Skywest or some of the other big regionals because it seems like most people starting here already have those minimums anyway.

I do wonder how many people who had interviewed late last year are able and available to start working at Skywest now - I am of the opinion that people have moved on and it's going to be a good sign of the (at least) slight tightening of the labor market at the regional level. If they have to do more interviews to fill the early july class, we can say the mythical shortage is more than mythical, at least a bit.

ATP will have an effect, but perhaps not dramatic. This last hiring wave came off of over 2 years of relatively stagnant airline hiring. By the nature of things applicants would have higher minimums. When all of these high time applicants are pulled from the pool, the airlines cant reduce their minimums like they have done in the past to accommodate demand.

Oddly, it seems that a qualified candidate with the required time now has his choice of poor paying jobs, with the choice to receive a small bonus to go to the worst companies that are the neediest since they can't retain or attract people aware of their options.

I think a signing bonus would be great, of course, to attract new talent. I also would say it's far from happening here, as retention still isn't poor, as compared to some of the competitors that have a vociferously unhappy pilot's group and a massive retention problem. Since there is no union to deal with, it affords far more flexibility than a 5/10k bonus like some other companies with unions are doing/rumored to be working on as that's their only option available other than prolonged negotiations

Regarding the "pool", it's a term used to describe the wait to start training class after you have been offered employment. Usually it's not really a "pool" if the airline is hiring continuously and starting routinely schedule classes, but when the music stops and there is a pause in class starts but hiring and job offers have continued to be extended, there is a wait, hence a pool of vetted applicants that are waiting to start.

I'm sure there are plenty of pilots at other regionals that would love to jump ship and head over to Skywest, but don't want to give up that seniority or second year pay. A signing bonus may be just be the ticket to persuade those guys to make the move. RAH knows this which is why they ask for a 24 month signature.
As the pool of qualified applicants dries up, (which it will at the regional level at least) I think we will see some clever incentives offered to steal pilots from other carriers.
Of course SkyWest already has the attraction of West coast bases and a happy pilot group.
