Skywest buying 100 E175
#111
I'm sure there are plenty of pilots at other regionals that would love to jump ship and head over to Skywest, but don't want to give up that seniority or second year pay. A signing bonus may be just be the ticket to persuade those guys to make the move. RAH knows this which is why they ask for a 24 month signature.
As the pool of qualified applicants dries up, (which it will at the regional level at least) I think we will see some clever incentives offered to steal pilots from other carriers.
Of course SkyWest already has the attraction of West coast bases and a happy pilot group.

Regarding the "pool", it's a term used to describe the wait to start training class after you have been offered employment. Usually it's not really a "pool" if the airline is hiring continuously and starting routinely schedule classes, but when the music stops and there is a pause in class starts but hiring and job offers have continued to be extended, there is a wait, hence a pool of vetted applicants that are waiting to start.

If you take the $5,000 bonus, you have to sign up for a life of misery for 24 months.
(Unless you go to the Q400, but that's a prop and only has one lav. Imagine how much that would suck on your myface page, compated to that bad ass E170!)

Combine in some of the work rules like DH and cancellation pay and it's even more money.
Year 3-8 FO pay rates are $2-10hr higher as well. Figure an extra $1000 a year for each $ an hour.
BTW, the pay rates on this website for SkyWest are about 2 years old.

2nd year RJ FO pay at SkyWest is $6 an hour higher than Republics. That more than makes up for the $5000 bonus there and without having a 24mo contract.

I think SkyWest will have to improve that first year pay or offer some kind of bonus to attract the amount of applicants they are going to need in the coming months.
If they do, Republic and Eagle, etc will have a big problem on their hands.

True, but the first year pay sucks, especially in training, and that would be a tough pill to swallow form someone who recently just went through that with a different carrier.

SKW might prefer applicants who take a longer view, rather than getting baited into years of suck by a mere $5K...an sum of money which a senior major airline CA can make by picking up a 2-3 day international out-and-back.
But if the labor market does get tight everybody will have to do something to attract ATP's now that the 300-hour option is finally off the table.

I'm just an outsider looking in, but I don't think Skywest will need to offer a bonus to find people. There's plenty of people from the west coast that have no desire to live/commute to an east coast base.

I spent my whole first year on the bro on reserve and never broke guarantee. There were people ahead of me who got a line right out of training but it really depends on how things are moving. You probably won't be on reserve as long as I was but you should still budget for it just in case. I got a line right at my year mark on the bro and would have been on reserve in any RJ base though so it was still a good move.
