So my question then becomes, why don't they put new hires at these other bases? Or allow line holders in MSP to fly less?

I'm considering it because I want to build time. Impossible to fly over 40hrs a month on reserve unless you pick up stuff on off days, most of which doesn't line up for me. I'm too junior to hold a line, but too senior to fly a lot on reserve...even with call first on.

The last award did show new hires getting basically any choice of base.. aside from the Colorado bases and IAH. Still not enough for reserve staffing

If you spread the reserves, people will be able to drop. By keeping them all in one base, only one base can drop, and they can OBR people to other bases to have coverage, while not allowing people to drop.
You dig?

Out of base reserve. Youre an msp reserve, theyre fat that week and need you in sfo. You get flown to sfo and sit in a hotel for 4 days.

I start on 7 Nov and am developing commuting contingency plans since I live near Denver and am unlikely to get that base for awhile.

You'll like it if you get sent to Denver.. if not. I honestly don't know what base would get you off reserve fast at this point. From my experience it is not MSP.. that's for sure.

Yeah I'm picking up what you're putting down. Just doesn't seem like it makes a lot of financial sense to have someone getting paid to sit reserve when they could have more reserves in a base and not have to pay someone for 4 days of per diem. Im not against obr, I beg for it and it is great when you get it.
