Training is somewhat intense but certainly do-able. If you’re afraid of our training we don’t want you.

Why would we need to improve it? Our pass rate is very high. Sounds like you might be scared of our training.

MCDUmanipulator 01-21-2020 12:23 AM

Pass rate was around 98% when I went through.

“whatmeworry,” are you worried?

Moneyj 01-21-2020 04:55 AM

Is there any flexibility of class dates when/if you are offered a class.

yes, they know people have to make arrangements so they’ll give you options. Now don’t go asking for a class 6 months from now, they won’t like that.

RNAV2020 01-21-2020 07:43 AM

Test (limitations, memory items, flows)

I’ve heard there’s a test at the very beginning of training.. anyone done it?

yes, V1 cut to SE ILS hand flown day 1. 98% pass rate

RNAV2020 01-21-2020 08:43 AM

Written.. but that one is ok. I suppose you are among the 2%.

My whole class passed without an issue at any step. The class in front of us had the whole class pass without any issue at any step. The class behind us had one guy botch up his oral for something stupid. If you show up and do what you're told you'll pass. It isn't hard. Shut up and color and you'll make it through.

The examiners I've met are all very nice and really want you to do well. Heck they will even help you during your type if it's something minor. I think the latest number I heard on pass rate was around 98.6% or something. The training is intense and pretty fast paced but it is certainly doable if you have the right attitude.

BeechedJet 01-21-2020 09:38 PM

The course schedule has been spread out a little with the week break built in which has definitely helped things.

Arliss 01-22-2020 06:36 AM

Talking to current line pilots it sounds like they vastly improved the training program. I thought it was easy. I particularly like how they do cockpit systems integration (CSI). There are 8 and each is a full gate to gate flight, so you get really proficient with the flows and the flow of a flight. Then during the CSI the instructor will throw things at you to illustrate the functioning of the systems and the ECAM philosophy. Then in FTD you perfect this and approaches. In sims you truly learn to fly the plane and do a lot of hand flying. The instructors are all very positive and eager to teach. It's become a fine training program. I came from a regional with a really good training program and I think Spirit's is maybe even better. I came out feeling like I knew the Airbus well and OE was fun.

how far in advance to class date do they give you that info, or do they? Is there a “pre packet”? Or do I need to source it myself, should I get the call? In 2012 at XJT, they didn’t want you having that info until after Indoc but most of us found a way to get it

Skypilotsv1984 01-23-2020 02:48 AM

It is sent to you about a month prior to class.

You don’t need to source any learning material yourself. They give you everything you need to be successful.

www.A320guide.com Look for the ibook if you want to know systems in-depth.

I just used what they gave me and I passed with no problem. It was my first 121 training and I’m not particularly intelligent or some sort of aviation dynamo.

69fastback 01-23-2020 12:20 PM

A lot of the issues people have with training is not trusting the system. People say know your flows when you show up, and that’s 100% true, but do yourself a favor and open up the AOM and learn the expanded flows along with the muscle memory. Once you get your iPad and access to Ethos, get a few guys together in front of the posters, with an iPad. Have 2 guys fly and 1 guy be ATC and start doing practice flights.

Trust the system and don’t get too far ahead of yourself. They’ll tell you what to learn and when to learn it. You may feel behind, but trust what the instructors are telling you. If they tell you you’re on track, don’t sweat it and just keep chopping away at it. It will all come together when it needs to.

I did too, but enough to pass and being well trained are two different pilots. We have a good evaluation department here but we have a very poor training department. The culture here is that if they actually train, they are spoon feeding and they shouldn’t have to do that . I think that’s a silly argument. I’ve been part of a very good training department, it’s just a different way here at NK and it’s a way that seems to work, for now .

I agree. But that isn’t what OP asked. He asked if he should source training material himself. I just said no. No need for that.

flyjbh 01-23-2020 03:11 PM

That’s true, I bloviated a bit. They will give you enough to complete the program successfully. AOM vol 1 is good and the United videos on YouTube are helpful

They’re VERY fair! The only ones who fail, deserve to fail for lack of preparation.

The pass rates for the oral, and the type ride are above 90%. The union came in during indoc and showed us the stats, can’t remember but it’s closer to roughly 95% pass rate overall IIRC.

Apparently there are rumors that it’s really low and there aren’t enough sims to be comfortable but that’s simply not the case any more at all. Personally it’s been the most pleasant and low-stress 121 training/testing I’ve experienced

Pink slips flow only to those that deserve them.

Skypilotsv1984 01-24-2020 04:20 PM

I have heard it has gotten a lot better. It was rough 3-4 years ago during the Jyri regime but it wasn’t impossible then, just required work and dedication. If you think you’re going to sit around the pool everyday while they spoon feed you, you’ll be in for an unpleasant surprise.

I did sit around the pool every day though. Poolside with the iPad on the school days; poolside with a beer on the off days. That’s how I got through.

I can't agree with this more. The oral was super easy and so was the type ride. You already have been told what to know. My whole class was well prepared cos we worked together and we had 100%. We would meet up after class at the pool or BBQ and quiz each other every day. Instructors and Examiners were very happy with my class.
