But what does Spirit's board really gain by merging with Frontier? There are absolute similarities, but Spirit makes so much money, in places Frontier doesn't, what would be the incentive for them to merge over the long term? Or to sell to anyone? I think the only people gaining from that merger would be Frontier. But what would Spirit really gain over the long term? Over the last 1-2 years, Frontier just seems to be playing behind the Spirit playbook. Frontier has very efficient airplanes right now, but they don't have nearly as many NEOs coming in over the next 2 years, as compared to Spirit. Spirit brought back their 319s solely for growth and for slots and to take advantage of the pandemic.
I just don't think Spirit has any real incentive to merge with anyone at the moment. Nor should they, honestly. There is no doubt that Indigo would absolutey love a merge with Spirit, though.

I'm a Spirit FO, mid 30s, living in the northeastern quadrant of NJ and based in AC. I'm also considering going to a legacy with United being my target. Not interested in Delta (can't stand their pilot culture) or American (I've heard lousy workrules, miserable pilots, incompetent management, and several years for upgrade). However, if I don't get hired by United (and I have zero interest flying cargo), do you think JetBlue would be a little bit of a step up or purely a pointless lateral move? They have a highly convenient Newark base, but JFK and LGA are doable as well (shorter mileage than AC but traffic and high bridge tolls. However I'm planning to move closer to NYC and could then use public transit to get to JFK/LGA). I really like JetBlue's product, they seem better run than spirit, their pay is better, they're flying to Europe, etc., and I understand upgrades are no worse than Spirit and very quick for the E190 in NY. What do you all think?

If they're legal and qualified for the job, why not? We need butts in the seats. With that said, I don't think there is a huge amount of them floating in the wild.

i like Australian’s...best people ever...but I know pilots here won’t like it because that means we will be able to staff the place which means we don’t have leverage for a raise.

staff the place with Australians? How many qualified austrailian pilots do you think there are? bringing in some foreign pilots wont solve the staffing issues here or hurt leverage in this environment. It will "help" put some butts in the seat, but we have a longgg way to go to staff this place and the future growth. Its a pilot market and we ALL have leverage. If we dont give raises, the ship will sink further due to the 12k + pilots needed at the legacies over the next few years alone. Im not worried about some austrailian pilots coming here. We all have to do our job as well and teach them how things work here in the US and the word "NO" for voting on the 1st contract that comes their way is an important word to teach them.

Econ 101 - Supply and demand.
We, as pilots, are selling our labor. There is strong demand and limited supply. This is good for us, especially since it is almost always the other way around. FINALLY good for us in this industry.
Now we got pilots that are okay with bringing in more supply of pilots to the market? More pilots will increase supply and decrease wages.
You think Spirit would be okay if Quantas came into our market and started selling Ultra low cost flights?
Doesn't matter whether they are Australian or American or anything else. More available pilots will hurt us.

No we weren’t. We were profitable as was the rest of the industry. Our margins and income (adjusted for our size) were nothing special. The legacies had better margins believe it or not. So even in good times with far lower costs we weren’t exactly printing money

Is it really a problem if our margins and income are nothing special because we’re plowing profits back into growing the airline? The legacies aren’t growing. They’re just trading customers and routes on the fringes. Granted, the performance is nothing like the early teens, but neither is the airline. And that kind of performance is usually an outlier for anyone.

I mean, we are running the identical play book. It would be quite easy and it would probably make the stock price soar.!??
