I just got an email from the fund raiser for the new hire that last month was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Apparently the DB that set up the fund raiser, Christopher Wharton, transferred the money into his personal account. He's transferred $23k after many requests, but still holding over $6k in donated money. After a little searching, it appears he's an Envoy pilot, same place Danny came from. This low life needs an education!

I've always found it odd that pilots look at pilots per aircraft when pilot staffing is really driven by block hours. APC says that Allegiant has 76 aircraft and 515 pilots, and Spirit has 65 aircraft and 1086 pilots. The difference is obviously that Spirit keeps the airplanes flying as much as possible because we have higher fixed costs and lower variable costs due to our new airplanes (when compared to Allegiant)
That website doesn't look very accurate. They estimate staffing based on aircraft instead of block hours. They also don't count our mandatory retirements. The unknown variable is attrition.

Well I have trouble with this method.
You can get a good idea of staffing by taking planes/pilots. At 1086 pilots and 65 aircraft, Spirit is at 16.7 pilots per plane and probably close to 9 CAs per plane with that (granted this number does have fluff for the new aircraft arriving monthly).
Allegiant is probably the worst example to compare this method to. They are not comparable to other airlines given that their business model is highly seasonal. Anyone who goes to LAS regularly can see this.
Aircraft block hours are a function of the season. Staffing is a function of the contract. Block hours always increase during summer months and then back down afterwards, doesnt mean that Spirit will need to hire more pilots to staff those high block hour months and then furlough them during the low season. It means our lines will be built up, more JRMs, open time etc...
An airline without work rules or a contract will require far less pilots than an airline with work rules and a contract. Best example is this current LOA, it will modify our contract and require less overall pilots without adding a single block hour to the equation.

Ok, here is what I've gotten so far. I am not trying to defend, nor allegate anyone here, but I think it is important to get all the facts before we start fires and slander people based on speculation and hapless rumors only. If anyone has anything else, then feel free to let me know. But PLEASE Be careful.
Here is an email from close a personal friend of both parties.
The fundraiser, as is, is not considered "earned income" so there is no tax on it. But the money was sent to Chris, because he set up the fundraiser, then he withdrew it and gave it to the Chandlers. By withdrawing it he is subject to taxes on anything over $13,000 because it now falls under "gift"... He talked to his accountant and theirs and it is possible he could be taxed up to $6000 so he said he would figure out the taxes and then give them the rest. After more research they found out he shouldn't be taxed, because he can show the paper trail. So he had to go to the bank and find out exactly how much was deposited (after the web sites fees) there were several deposits not a lump sum...
He was supposed to have an answer for them 3 days ago but he was flying and hadn't got back to them at the time. This morning he transfered all remaining funds.
I know Danny and Chris, I'm so sad that this is unfolding like this. Chris set that fundraiser up with the best of intentions its just turned into a big mess.

I just received a reprimand from Norman. I guess he is the admin on the Spirit Board. Aparentry he feels he controls what happens to his posts once they hit the world wide web.
My point was that pilot staffing is driven by block hours so that website is wrong to only look at industry standard pilots per aircraft. Spirit has one of the highest block hours per aircraft in the industry.
The amount of pilots required per block hour is determined by our contract and the contract allows flexibility because pilots can be scheduled for less flying during seasonal lows and more flying during seasonal highs. When determining pilot staffing, flight ops looks at the forecast of block hours for future months.
Pilot staffing is affected by contract work-rules but not nearly as much as profitability and resulting growth/reduction of block hours. In 2010 we increased the max lineholder block hours per month from 85 hours to 90 hours. Many people claimed it was going to result in slow upgrades and furloughs but instead we went from an 8 year upgrade to a 2.5 year upgrade.

I agree, it's not as bad as it first appeared upon reading the email. Though, if you don't have the knowledge on how to set something up as this, or not willing to consult your tax accountant prior to doing it, than you should leave it for someone else to do. I didn't donate to have 20% of my donation go to possibly paying his potential tax burden. It was meant for the family.
