Of course Spirit pilots will have priority over off line pilots though.
Good luck getting an answer though. Don't even bother holding if the "please wait" message picks up immediately. I'm convinced that IT has an auto-ignore button that they use liberally.

Who controls our jumpseat, the gate agent or the PIC?

I'm all for helping out the agent if you can, but the agent is there to assist the PIC, not the other way around.

I hope that if it gets down to a situation where we're leaving a guy behind, the PIC is making sure the guy being left behind was the last guy to check in (at the gate), not the off-line guy who showed up early and got 'bumped' by another off-line guy who rolled up to the gate a few minutes prior to departure after listing for the flight hours prior. Our ALPA Jumpseat Committee's policy is clear - "first come, first serve", not "first list, first serve".

Lets prevent the further erosion of PIC authority.

We have had more and more jumpseaters lately because of our expanding route system. LAS-DEN has been huge. Last week we had at least 10 asking for a ride because Southwest was weight restricted (A WN guy will have to explain that why the 737 is limited on a 1.5 hour flight, second segment maybe?). Luckily, we had a ton of no shows and were able to get everyone onboard. I had to explain to a gate agent that would could put someone on the FA jumpseat if needed. She tried to tell me they weren't authorized too. I passed that along to the LAS supervisor and I think its been cleared up but I still try and make it to the gate every leg just to be sure. Being a FO I can't approve or deny a jumpseat but at least I can pass the info along to the captain so one is left behind.

Funny, before the BIG PILOT SHORTAGE, it would have taken DECADES to go through the thousands of internal rec's to fill our 16 pilots/mo.

Candidates, please make checks payable to "RR" (see, I can do it too), with the assurance that you will be put in the stack somewhere, based on:

1. Who you know
2. Strengths on your resume (or cv for you non Americans) aka "Experience"
3. Phase of the moon on the day you interview.

** All applicants will be considered for employment, or "placed in the stack", or discarded. Paying to attend this event will have no impact on your employment status, but will be appreciated by a few mid level managers that will use the cash generated, to fund an ALL expenses paid vacation to Central/South America.

Thank you for your interest in Spirit Airlines!
Agreed. I went to a job fair, saw NK folks, and never heard a whiff. This was with an internal recommendation.

Why is NK wasting their time on going to this job fair to get other people's hopes up? They have enough qualified apps (as in with ATP and more than 4k total) to fill up classes for the next 3 years. All they have to do is call and start looking at guys without internal recs.

Guy I flew with last week got hired after the job fair last fall, no internals. I also recall meeting someone awhile back who was hired under a similar situation. Not putting anyone down that didn't get a call (I'm sure we're overlooking some great people), but rather rebuking the arguement that these job fairs are a waste of time. They may be the ONLY way for some to get their name noticed.

Anecdotal evidence.
On balance, it's a scam.
Here is a conspiracy theory... ACS charges admission, kicks back a percentage to attending airlines, who agree to hire at least one. More ancillary revenue!

Side note: wonder if any pilots would be willing to pay for training...

I too was hired at a job fair without rec's (2007). Highly recommend attending.

Could be true; wouldn't put it past them. Wasn't the job fair last fall put on by/paid for by Spirit? That could be the difference.

Of course, you have no chance with the pretty girls if you never ask them to dance...
