Children of Current Employees

I am straight up saying that United has missed the boat on many many highly qualified individuals, girls, boys, white, black, whatever other division humans have made, etc., who were too busy managing a flight operation, or picking up trash in their community, or testing and certifying new equipment with the FAA, or raising scholarship money for underprivileged college students, or earning a post graduate degree, or taking care of a special needs child, etc., to attend a costly job fair on the opposite coast.
While on furlough I flew with a lot of American expats that wanted to know the "secret" to getting hired at United. It's simple, you have to set yourself apart from the pack to get noticed (job fair, CP meet and greet, etc) and then also be somewhat lucky. Of all the people I offered CP meet and greets, exactly 0 has made an effort to attend one. Always an excuse: I don't think I could get time off, we're traveling, oh I think we will have family visiting then, etc. Then later I get the random text message "hey, my app has been in a year already.....why hasn't United called me?" If someone can't make time to set themselves up for success why should United HR even give them the time of day?

No, what you are straight up saying is United HR didn't offer employment to people that made it clear that other life issues took priority over a multimillion dollar career at United Airlines.

I ran into a random the other day said his app has been in for a couple years and nothing. He was shocked United hadn’t called with his “credentials”....I asked how often he updates his app? He said every other month I told him I updated mine at the end of every day I flew.
He said man that’s a lot of work.......can’t help someone who is not willing to put in the effort.

Liked it way better when Pilots actually did the hiring and not some lame-ass HR department seeking only candidates who had done volunteer work at the nearest leper colony. Who cares if they can't actually fly an airplane or have the personality of bean dip, you've got the Mother Theresa seal of approval so you're in.
Real easy interview, would I want this guy/gal sitting next to me for next 2-12 hours on the flight deck of one of our aircraft? Simple yes or no and off you went.

.By the way United donated a million dollars to the nations largest food bank today and last week gave out large grants to help inner cities at our hubs. Guess it’s a corporate culture, can’t blame them for wanting good people who care about more than airplanes. If you don’t want to jump through the hoops then don’t.

Also sucks for my friends that do all of the above, have the volunteer work, have their apps reviewed and told "you're just what they're looking for you should get an email anytime" annnnnnnnnnd circketts.
no rhyme/reason on some of it.
Or, those that so freely admit that once they got the job they stopped their volunteer work and it was simply resume fodder.
Sure, "do what ya gotta do", but it goes against the mantra of hiring the people that "have integrity, go above and beyond", etc etc.

Master and Penguin,
Your responses don't line up with reality. I'm watching some of the cream of the crop get hired elsewhere. These are guys and gals with all of the credentials you've mentioned, and many more. They've met with CPs, even attended a job fair or two, they've gone above and beyond in every aspect and are very qualified. They're calling me asking how Billy or Susie, with faux volunteer work, multiple training failures, checkered employment history, etc is getting hired while they wait. What's the secret? It's not what you guys mentioned in your posts.
I am not speculating on these stories. During one CP meet and greet with a friend, he was told to "keep doing what you're doing". Another friend, with what I'd consider to be one of the best resumes of any applicant, went to ONE job fair. When I walked his resume in, United said his total time was low. Delta looked at his resume and told him he'd hear from them the following week. He works there now.
When an engine explodes on an airplane, and a passenger is sucked out, people aren't going to care how many job fairs the CA and FO went to. You guys work at United? Shouldn't we be concerned about longevity over image? The young guys on the seniority list sure hope so.
It looks like John Carr sees it based on his post.
