Not a Brown dude.

But, yes, I flew cargo at an MD11/MD10 purple tail rival.

flame away purple dudes….

No flames necessary. This is why many opt to get out of hub turns asap and do either international (which has its own issues) or day flying. At least at FDX it’s something that can be done relatively early in seniority progression. We even have new hires going directly into the 777 who will never do anything but long haul international in their entire career!

QOL is a huge consideration. I had a class date from UPS same month as United and declined. If I went brown my plan was to get in, make as much money as possible and get out. 55-60 years max before retiring seems like the play over there for sure.

Similar/same for me. 1 at brown, 1 at purple.

I'm not a brown, or purple dude. But those friends I referenced above hardly fly any nights. And if so, it's likely, by choice or was absolutely necessary for bidding purposes.

I don't commute anymore, they both do. The DH/deviation bank takes a lot of stress out of that for them.

Food for thought: United has an AIP that may become a TA very soon. UPS has a contract extension that became a TA today. In 2025 UPS captains would top out at $401/hr with an A plan worth $139,000/yr after 30 years (plus 12% B plan).

I’m really hoping United’s new TA blows those rates for UPS out of the water.

I fly less red-eyes at purple than my friends do at UAL/DAL. They've been at their jobs for years, working 4-5 more days per month than I do,. They're doing a redeye at the start or end of each trip, making 20-30% less, with no pension.

So yeah, if you bid for nothing besides night hub turns, it will wear you down. But day flying is widely available as long as you don't mind flying to EWR, DFW, OAK, ONT, LAX, SAT, MIA, PHX, JFK, PDX all the time.

It's looking like $403/hr for United's top rate but only $331/hr for their 757 captains.

UPS 757 captains will be making $401/hr if their TA is ratified.

That's a big difference, especially with the higher guarantee at UPS.

For context, that’s probably mostly because UPS has a blended rate. Their CURRENT 757 rates are far and above everyone else.

True, but this is a UA vs UPS thread, so comparing UA narrowbody pay to UPS narrowbody pay is relevant, and UPS blows UA out of the water.

What others fail to realize is the diversity of flying. I spent 10 years flying two weeks on/off. Those 2 weeks on would consist of 5 legs @10-12 hours with multiple days in HNL, SYD and somewhere in Asia. Mix of day and night outside the window.

And I can compare. Family member is a UA captain.

UPS NB blows EVERYBODY’s NB pay out of the water. There is a reason for that. That’s all I’m saying, not that you cannot make a comparison. One just needs to understand the differentiators and the possible reasons for them.

How's it looking like that? Literally nobody has actual real payrate data for united yet.

Will it be 403/hr 757? Doubtful. But don't compare a number that has yet to exist...
