"QOL and junior NB CA" are completely incongurent concepts. Everyone less than 50% in the DCA737CA category is getting 89.9 hours/mo and has a long time now. Add to this being at the bottom and getting all the sh*t that no one wants, MUCH more work, hassle, time away from base, etc and you get my point. The CA $ isn't worth all the BS, hence guys like me aren't taking their "upgrade" and we have 100s of unfilled NB CA vacancies system wide (hint: it isn't just about the bad reserve rules). As others have stated, DCA 756 is a really good gig (especially if you live in base). Great trip mix and reserve is easy when you live within 2 hrs - I used to bid reserve by choice seasonally and once had a 9 month no-hitter, went to TK 3x for landing currency. I had to make a similar decision when I started at UAL about 9 years ago, and have no regrets whatsoever. There's a reason the average age of the top 30 in the right seat of DCA756 is about 57. Would you rather have a glass of wine with dinner in Zurich on your 24 layover, or two breakfast crew meals because your first two legs of three are before 9 in the morning on a 3 day domestic that's worth less credit time? Start on the 756, then bid 777FO if you want the extra $ and sit reserve from home. Oh, and the good idea fairies are going to have to do some really eye-watering work on the UPA before NB CA makes sense for a lot of us.

Hay CB.. would you post this response on the “smaller FO Pay raise” thread?!
As you stated.. there’s going to have to be some eye watering work…

It going to be a three part fix.
1) reserve rules (especially for commuters)
2) pay
3) some sort of “extra” benefits

Not to hijack this thread.
Reserve Sucks.. but it sucks less if you’re local, and also if you’re on a WB.

I'm aspiring to return to airlines after a long hiatus. NoVA area. Been talking to two local UAL pilots living here in domicile for DCA/IAD:,
- one is a long-time friend who is a NB CA (bus). For reserve, he thinks there are enough in-domicile pilots who live on the MD side of DC who keep BWI covered, so if you live on the Virginia side expect 70/30 IAD/DCA, with BWI only a few trips a year.
- the other is a 737 FO more than senior enough to hold NB CA, but instead is about to upgrade equipment to 757FO. His sentiments were exactly above. (staying on Boeing equipment is gravy)

BStill, good info, thanks. Did they comment on a typical work schedule? Days off per month? 3 day or 4day trips? Typical duty day length vs overnight length? Etc...

I'm not against sitting reserve, and I'm not against working 89 hrs per month. I'm more curious how much control one might have over their schedule as a fairly junior guy (1-3 yrs).

What if you are 3 hours (south) door to parking IAD parking lot with no traffic? I know I want 756 eventually. I think I would like the schedule and destinations. I have a class date coming up soon. Should I just go 756 from the start and sit short call somewhere north of Richmond? How long before I would hold a line? Or go 737 initially and move over to the 756 when I have the senority to hold a line?

Sitting SC in your car will suck… I’d try for a fleet/seat that gets you a line quickest… so 737. You can bid up to 756 anytime without a freeze.

if you can hold a line it would t be an issue for you if you have commute options. Thee commuter rule requires a primary and backup trip… don’t think we have that at FLL and RSW year round which would make it bit more painful. Most Florida pilots go to EWR when I was based their on 756 previously… seem to have more flights.

737 Capt any base is getting 89.9 with no ability to trade or drop. This happens when you take a new 737 max every 3 days BUT you can't fill any Captain vacancies. The QOL is so bad as the this person wrote nobody will bid the left seat.

Welcome to the SUCK!

That is too far away to sit reserve on the 756 which could be a couple of years (worst case).

Picture this scenario:

Friday night short call that starts at 2100. You drive up with short call distance to start your 13 hour short call window. At 0100 screw scheduling calls you and releases you from short call and reassigns you another short call with min rest. So now you drive home at 0100 to get some sleep to then drive back within short call range at 1100. You sit 8-10 hours of your 14hr short call and after the early LHR flights coast out they call you and put you on min rest for a 0600 short call the following day to cover the morning bank. This time you sit the full 14hr short call and are released. The next morning is your last day off and you have "reserve days off" the next 3 days. You are just getting your coffee and they call you with the late LHR/FRA trip departing 14 hrs later and your next two "off days" are rolled and if you had plans you have to cancel them.

Lather rinse repeat.
