Isn't that a win for everyone? More mainline flying, more pilots hired, more seniority for everyone here already.
A350’s, Boom Jets, eVTOL’s, 30,000 pilot group, FAA safety audit, massive order book with company whose employee’s are striking & finances failing; are all still in que.. Point is, talk is talk, UA benefits in keeping that flying at the regionals for cheap labor. 0 interest/benefit for Kirby to bring it to mainline

BFE was mainline long before it was outsourced, starting in the late 90s. But go ahead, turn your nose up and bid the "glamorous" destinations.

Many of the airports United has pulled out of are still served by these competitors.
and that is balanced out by airports United serves but those same competitors do not.

you really want to compare destinations served in the USA by United vs Southwest? Or a JetBlue Spirit etc?

Delta and American? I'd say that's a valid discussion with recognition each one has their strengths and weak spots for coverage in a region.

But United is not being harmed because they stopped service to some 50 seat markets that probably shouldn't have had 50 seat jets to begin with.

United has 121 A319/B737s with 126 seats. Delta is replacing their 88 110-seat 717s with 100 A220-300s with 130 seats. The 45 Delta A220-100s have 109 seats and they have 57 A319s with 132 seats.

Delta currently has 188 active A319/717/A220 including 26 A220-300 which fly in the same routes the 100 does.

United has 120 A319 and 737-700. I’m not trying to say anything other than pointing out that United has to rely more heavily on 76 seat aircraft right now than delta does. That is all in terms of a raw number perspective.

The A220 is the only “mainline” new aircraft that airlines can order to enter into the RJ market. I’ve flown upfront on an A220 while an LCP was flying it. I picked his brain for 2 and a half hours. We carried 110 people on the same leg length that I flew with 76 people and had the exact same fuel load. It sips gas. It’s comfortable upfront too.

A 737-Max9 is not a regional aircraft substitute.

Percentage of destinations operated by mainline aircraft for AAL/UAL/DAL

GUM (UA) - 100%
ATL (DL) - 88.4%
EWR (UA) - 81.6%
SFO (UA) - 81.6%
SEA (DL) - 79.0%
LAX (DL) - 77.2%
MSP (DL) - 75.4%
MIA (AA) - 75.0%
ORD (UA) - 74.4%
SLC (DL) - 71.2%
JFK (DL) - 73.3%
LAX (UA) - 73.3%
JFK (AA) - 72.3%
IAD (UA) - 71.6%
BOS (DL) - 71.0%
IAH (UA) - 70.0%
PHX (AA) - 69.0%
DFW (AA) - 68.6%
CLT (AA) - 68.5%
LAX (AA) - 66.0%
DTW (DL) - 64.2%
DEN (UA) - 63.4%
PHL (AA) - 60.0%
ORD (AA) - 51.6%
LGA (DL) - 28.7%
LGA (AA) - 25.4%
DCA (AA) - 25.3%

In regards to the thread title this was UAL’s percentage of destinations operated by mainline in the summer of 2019– reference bold

ORD 43.6%
IAH 45.2%
DEN 44%
EWR 55.1%
SFO 69.6%
IAD 41.0%
LAX 62.5%

The fascinating part of these numbers— at this point in time AAL/UAL/DAL have practically the same amount of total mainline aircraft in their fleets.

That's just it. The A220 is not an RJ. It's list price is 62%+ higher than an E175. DAL has 45 A220-100s with 109 seats and 3,600 nm range, but it is now opting for 100 A220-300's with 130 seats and 3,400 nm range to replace the 717s. DAL and UAL are adding seats on mainliners and have parked tons of single class small RJs. More basic economy and market segmentation that is pulling passengers from the LCCs and P2P carriers.

And yet United serves more destinations than any other carrier and is one of three that are profitable.
