One every 18 minutes! That would be 80 per day. That would mean the entire combined pilot group would turnover in 5 months. More like one every 18 hours.

Whoa there EWRflyr. I'm one of those 777 Left Seaters and I'll tell you and all right here and now that scope is number ONE in importance in the JCBA for me and for all those my seniority that I know. Most of us have already walked at least one picket line and will be ready again if needed. Maybe those in my seat where you are see it differently, but I'm not hearing any disagreement with my peers.

That's good to hear. B/c I know of more than one 737 CA that doesn't agree with you. The ones I'm talking about are not 83 hires either.

Did he move into the left seat of the 777 right after new-hire indoc? Most 777 captains I've flown with had a long history that began with service as a plumber on the 727 or right-seat gigs on the DC-9 or 737-100 & 200. Do pilots necessarily lose their empathy for the plight of others when they transition to the left seat of the big iron?

Right you are! Scope is not exclusively a junior pilot issue. Recapturing the 70-seat flying might seem to make it so, but the advent of 95-seat and larger RJs make it a mid-seniority issue, and issues such as the UAL-Air Lingus code share take scope right to the top of the seniority list.

This is not an issue just for a segment of the seniority list. Unless one will be retiring in the next year or two, this is an issue about the airline being an airline and controlling feed and flying or moving further down the road toward a virtual airline. For the life of me, I cannot understand the willingness of any company to cede control of their brand image and product. Management has clearly demonstrated that they are not trustworthy with RJs and scope. All of this RJ flying was and should be mainline flying... there should not be any distinction between mainline and regional or feeder, etc. It is ALL MAINLINE flying. Let's just make the contract reflect what was and should be reality.

If they can continue to outsource the smaller aircraft flying, they will next turn their focus to the mid and wide body flying. Time to stop the erosion.

I totally agree. With regard to ceding control of its trademarked brand or image, I recall a Continental DC-10 many years ago that flew on an interchange agreement with Garuda Indonesia. CAL pilots would fly it to Guam, and Garuda pilots would take it on to Bali.

One half of the airplane had Continental paint, the other Garuda colors. The Wall Street Journal commented that traditional airline management would abhor such a paint scheme, but to Lorenzo and his boys, selling airline tickets was "like selling shoes."

I just read all 13 pages!! Gotta say i like most of it. Some unity would be nice. But can someone explain to me how a cfi with 1200/350 gets hired at a legacy? Oh and the year is 2004.

Some of you old guys think its our fault. Well, maybe if you did not give up scope and said fu to managment we are going to fly everything... Well, just maybe my sorry ass could have got hired at a legacy.
