First year is what the company thinks you’re worth. Second year is what the union says you’re worth.

Many moons ago, pre-2006 contract, I personally witnessed and heard a UPS manager say almost exactly that.

"Second year pay on is what the IPA can negotiate, first year pay is what UPS thinks you're worth."

Knowing at least some of the dinosaurs with that mindset have ridden into the sunset, I sincerely hope both parties use an eventual future TA to remedy our abysmal first-year pay.

can you imagine all the “back in my day” stories that new FOs will have to hear if first year pay goes to 120 an hour. It might not be worth the pay increase

This platitude needs to fizzle away. Lets call a spade a spade / identify what it really is:

A pay for training scheme.

It also dissuades people with low relative interest in ups from coming here, camping out until their higher level choices become available.

And as someone pointed out earlier - supply/demand factors allow it.

We have tried, and UPS drew a line in the sand. They are the ones that said no way to higher 1st year pay. Just like all of the majors had before - abysmal 1st year pay.

Unfortunately they have little reason to change it. It saves a few bucks and keeps people away that are already eyeing other airlines. As long as they can keep filling classes I doubt it increases much. We just don’t hire at the scale of bigger airlines.

Because the rest of the years are so high. It's simply the price of admission.

unfortunately it’s not really all that high anymore. Hopefully the next contract changes that.

It's higher than any of the legacy carrier widebody 2nd year FO rates. And you won't get a pension at the legacies.
