Default Base/Equipment Vacancies & Trades

How often do vacancies or base trades occur at brown? Assuming not very often being how small UPS is compared to the big 3 & purple?

As needed. in good times… twice a year…..in bad times…go years without one.

For perspective, Purple bids are years apart in good times. Go on their threads to learn how new hires get the 77 while senior FOs are stuck on the 75.

is it like that at UPS too? Granted it’s all one pay rate, but if you’re on the 757 and want to switch to the 747, could they keep on your plane in perpetuity while new hires are getting the 747 like purple does?

If you're on the 757 and want to switch to the 747, you must 1. not be subject to a transition freeze (18mo for newhires, 24mo after a lateral transition), 2. have a bid published that has original or recurred vacancies on the 747, and 3. be able to hold those original or recurred vacancies via seniority.

Newhire positions at UPS are the result of a system bid. A bid is published creating positions, all pilots on property who aren't subject to a transition freeze/seat lock can bid those original or recurred positions, and all unfilled positions after the bid is awarded are available for assignment to newhires.

Positions created by a bid are valid for 18 months. It is possible that positions remain from a previous bid when a new bid is published; those remaining positions from the first bid are only available for newhires and ARE NOT available for pilots on property to bid into on the new bid.

Got it. So basically if you want to switch planes after 18 months as a new hire and there are openings, it’s yours. Sounds much better than FedEx where you can be stuck endlessly on the 757 while watching junior classes to you get the 777.

It can be yours after you’re awarded a different base/plane through the system bid. I wouldn’t count on the timing working out perfectly to coincide with your seat lock expiring at 18 mo, but it might.
