Mine were definitely for starting class not sim but maybe at the time they didn't differentiate.

Had lunch this week with one of the highest managers in the airline, his words " expect a bid of the same size as last years in the same timeframe"

For those of us that don't know...was last year a lot? Does this mean robust hiring?

301 vacancies on last December's bid - equivalent to about 1400 at Delta.

Question

Was told there was a "new-hire" orientation in anc earlier today. Apparently most, not all but most of them were managers.
Seemed to be nice guys (they always are ) BUT can anyone explain why anyone would be interested in such a position?
Supposedly they're all in their late 40s and early 50s.

Without this turning into mud-slinging [we ALL feel the same way about this airline-within-airline arranged marriage setup.. ] - why are people applying for such positions when every single airline out there is hiring?? Does that even make sense?

Maybe now, but soon it will turn into "why the **** did I take this job" syndrome. The new management job may get you four bars, but the pay and retirement benefits are nowhere near where they were a few years ago. Oh, and have fun working with basically no one respecting you. Have fun fellas!!

I know two of these recent hires....
And yup, I would classify them as four-bar-syndrome. Guys who have been heavy captains for the last 10 years.

So what exactly is this whole "managers hired as pilots/captains" situation? Is there a separate application from a normal ups line pilot position? Do they go through the training like line pilots then afterwards are off to the office and only occasionally pick up a trip here and there to be current? Are they hired on as sim instructors/check airman then go to the line? I take it they are not represented by the union or have to pay dues.. is that the beef? Are they on the seniority list? Also, how is the pay different? just never heard of something like this..

I can answer a few ...

Office work, Yes. And fly when scheduling "emergencies" occur. Which occurs so often, that its not really an emergency, just poor staffing.

Some are hired as sim instructors/check airman but can NEVER go to the line.

Not represented by union, voted to remain unrepresented.

NOT on the seniority list.

The early hires (pre 2000) had a good compensation package, comparable to a union Captain. I do not know the particulars but the recent hires are probably making union FO rates without comparable health benefits, retirement, or scheduling rules.

Now go search for NURP on APC ... plenty of info should come up.
