I was at AWAC eight years. Mainline is a completely different job. Never mind the 8 days of working long call reserve sitting at home while making $120k-$130k/yr, 16% 401k, the better hotels when you do work, the better equipment that generally doesn't even have a single MEL on it, drastically less work while you are on duty, etc. etc. Yeah, it's a horrible job, I kick myself for leaving AWAC every day I go to work
. I can think of a bunch of companies that are a lot worse to work for over AA/US. In fact most of them.
The people that downplay the job are those who are secretly envious.

No but seriously, congrats on the job. If I would have gotten the opportunity back when US airways was doing the hiring I would have gone too. I am not denying the fact that AA mainline is a great place to be. For now. My opinions are just, those my own. Everyone is entitled to their own. With the wholly owned regionals attracting the I don't need a degree/ yeah what ever, I am flowing anyways crowd, I don't want to be there when 99% of the right seat are them and a great portion of the left seats are also.
When looking for a job I don't look at the money only. I look at culture and the company as a whole. No one is perfect, but what I see every day in and out of phl/dca/clt doesn't impress. I guess I don't view the airlines as the only thing that I'm willing and able to do in life.

All company-pilot contract negotiations have halted, and no one has any information or even rumors.
It does feel like something is brewing up in Appleton. Either way 31 pilots gone this month which means if they don't raise retention bonuses or announce something big, by about the beginning of summer flying we won't have the capacity to fulfill the contract.
Best case: we get a new long-term contract
Worse case: we announce closure which would place AWAC in 'distress' status which should help the more senior guys into the Majors and the junior guys into LLCs. It's not ideal but it's not another regional.

It all seems odd. There's been an unsettling quiet among everyone from union and management I've talked to.

Not sure if it's in the ALPA by-laws, but a failed carrier represented by ALPA typically gets some kind of favorable hiring preferences at other ALPA carriers. It's not a guaranteed job, or even interview, but it could help out getting ZW resumes higher in the stacks of a lot of HR departments.

My guess is they wont announce closure. They will say something along the lines of, "due to staffing and mainlines reduction in our flight schedules we are going to park more airplanes" "also we will be dual qualifying all captains"
then the floodgates will open. And I think that yes Air Wisconsin on your applications may move it up the stack at some ALPA airlines.
OR another guess is they announce we have been sold or we are acquiring another airline. Which is just as likely a scenario. But there may be reasons that we don't understand why they cant just say it now.
It is beyond frustrating, however they cant continue very long at this rate.
