2) Picking up open time is as easy as couple of clicks (line holders only). Most of the stuff in OT is crap though, and you’re usually better off picking up someone else’s posted trip. Reserves can not pick up OT, they can only put in a request for “Over Guarantee” (on days off only, awarded if they are low on reserves, full value of trip pays on top of your reserve guarantee, so it’s a good deal).

1) Sorta... you can “request” out of base pickup, where scheduling offer you a trip they are low on reserves, but I’m not sure how successful folks are at that.

One thing that reserve commuters CAN do is “profer” (volunteer to fly first) for a trip on their first day (or any day for that matter) of reserve. It’s awarded the day prior in seniority order, so at least you’d know what you are commuting to. Also, some folks will bid for a late RAP (reserve assignment period), so they can commute in on their first day of reserve. If you were commuting PHX-MIA, you could bid an 1800 RAP and commute same day no problem. Also, on your last day of reserve, you are automatically released at 1000L if you do not have an assignment. Don’t need to answer your phone after that either.

Also... I want to add a question for the reserve wide body commuters...
If you have 4 days of reserve availability, all trips in your domicile are 3 day trips and if by the end of day on day 2 you don’t have a trip, will they release you from the rest of your work block since you can’t really be used?

Will you be used? Very low odds. Will you be released? No.

I'll second what Slice said. Who knows, they can come up with some oddball stuff.
MIA 777 FO Pre 117 RAPs,
Thought I was home free, phone rings at 4am for MIA-Dingo (SDQ) FO turn with 6 am sign on last day on call.
Wouldn't surprise me to see a MIA-MCO-MIA turn for guys on last day.
(If you get one as FO, remember there is no FB relief FO on the flight and the FO should do a walk around in MCO, ask how I know)
