We've run 1000 new hires through the school house in the 1980's-1990's.
I don't know, but guess, that the S80 retirement is generating additional training demand. It doesn't appear that the current school house manning could handle 1000 new hires. That's just an opinion.

My understanding is the schoolhouse is trying to catch up. With more Mad Dogs leaving the fleet and other upgrades, they needed some breathing room.
When the hiring wave really hits in a couple of years, they will need to be ramped up to handle a lot more than today.

I have not yet applied to AA but was wondering, for someone wishing to live in South Florida, how realistic is it to get MIA as a base for a new hire. Also, what aircraft is a junior pilot likely to get based in MIA?

MIA is a junior base for both 73 and 320. You will get it quickly.

At least two pilots in a June class got MIA in indoc and I know of one from an August class who got a preference bid almost immediately and is transferring in December.
