Atlas Air Hiring
#3031
Wow, you sure are well connected...
Pardon my skepticism, but I'll stay on the sidelines for the scenario that you posted, and I'll believe it when (if) it happens.
I'm not questioning your source, or your information, but a healthy dose of skepticism may be warranted here...

Now THAT much I can completely agree with. That has been MatlinPatterson's MO from the start. It's precisely what happened at ATA after our admittedly leadership-challenged management was maneuvered into unloading our MDW gates and LGA landing slots to Southwest. It would seem the MatlinPatterson folks are not in the business of running airlines....they are in the business of artfully trashing them, selling off the pieces, picking the carcass and making a ton of money in the process.

Skepticism is always good. That said, as an Atlas pilot, you're looking pretty good right now. It wouldn't surprise me if the NAA/World people are only offered preferential interviews and not SLI. After all, its another way to dump the senior salaries in favor of lower cost new hires.

Add it all up and you get Atlas getting everything they need from Global Air Services WITHOUT having to take the MD-11s that they don't want. The hedge fund managers who run Global take the money and run.
Sounds like a prepackaged deal to me. Expect an announcement this summer.

Well, maybe the assets. Why would Atlas want the certificates? Or the longevity that would come with an outright merger? Be careful what you wish for, IMHO.

Exactly. They only need the assets. They could, hypothetically, wait in the wings until Global goes Chapter 7 then pounce. However, then there would be more competition for those assets.
Remember, Atlas has already offered to buy NAA once. That's a key point.

Ok, it's my turn to stir the pot...I've heard that even Atlas is looking at 777s. But then that is nothing new. Every viable company, and even government, has to look at contingencies and opportunities for strategic planning.
This time last year, (before the 767 announcement), a former Management pilot told us (at a breakfast, solve-the-world's-problems, union meeting !!) that the 767 (or equivalent) was being considered for about 10 years. Finally, last year, the stars all lined up and here we are actually operating the light twin (767).
So, another fleet type (777, I hope, and not the A330) is likely long way off...5 years or more.
Since we are spreading rumors, whatever happened to the oldie but goodie about the 767 tankers we were supposed to get?!!

That is of course true, Cliff, but they are customer-owned...Boeing, in the case of the 4 B744 LCFs that we operate. I'm not so sure that we would be in the market for P&W-powered 744s if we were to own or even lease them.
