Atlas Air Hiring
#3341
777,
I don't know that it helps, but i've never heard that it hurts to submit a resume via one of our pilots with the window closed. Decoding the hiring process here is a bit like reading tea leaves - unless you're directly involved with the process, we're left to guess almost as much as applicants are. For me personally, I would send a resume/letter to the chief pilot as a way to introduce myself, and mention that of course you'll apply when the window opens. My understanding is that HR controls the process, so you might send one to DB as well. I'd ask your friends here for advice, but it would make me feel better to do something rather than just wait.
The general consensus (another WAG) is that the app window will reopen this summer. We're due to get 3 more 767s in short order, doubling our current fleet. We have 3 classes of 767 FOs out of training - almost all have at least begun OE - with three more in the school house. If we get the additional freighters on or close to schedule, we'll need more pilots. It also depends on the size of the current pool of swimmers, and that number is pretty much a WAG as well.
So far, AMC experience has been a plus. However, after OE, I would expect you to do DHL flying until you have a few classes junior to you and would approach interview questions with enthusiasm for either operation.
I've heard (again, basically a WAG) that LORs only come into play after you've been selected by HR, but I'd bring as many as possible. I had none internally, but I brought LORs from every chief pilot, check airman, sim instructor and long-haul pilot who knew me well. They will ask during the in-person interview who you know at Atlas.
As for the phone interview, it's been more than a year since I had mine, but i think the general questions buried in this thread will serve you well. It's mainly designed (IMO) to see if you understand the lifestyle here. Brush up on how we do ACMI and the whole gateway travel/imputed income tax, and i think you'll be fine.
If any more experiened Atlas guys can correct me on anything, please do.
Best of luck!

When i last talked to someone in the hiring process, they told me that a recommendation letter gives you points, depending on how "good" the recc is. There is a Max number of points you can get-I think they said 30. So, 20 letters of recc will not help. I'm not sure how they "rank" the letters. My understanding is that the points apply all the way through the process: If you have enough points, they will call u for the phone interview, then, if you have enough points they will call u for the interview, etc., etc.
The odds of being hired with a Ltr of Recc are MUCH, MUCH higher than if you don't.....there ARE people who are hired with no Ltrs of Recc.
The hiring process is always subject to change, so all of the above info may be incorrect now.
I think there are around 25 left in the pool currently. And, some of those may have gotten other jobs and will not be available when they are called by Atlas.

The 5/30 class is the "last class" of the year, however, this changes daily. Keep in mind they've already had a couple of "last class" for the year.
So, after the 5/30 class it looks like about 32 in the pool. And that's assuming that all pool-ies are still available and haven't accepted employment elsewhere.
Hang in there, swimming with you.
