To think that we used to hire pilots. Fred Astaire and Mother Teresa with a pilot's license need only apply now.
Perfect attendance tells me the guy flew sick. A 100% operation rate tells me the guy got lucky with operational aircraft. The List goes on.
I'll take a line pilot who can fly, has SA, and likes to have fun any day.

My question is how many interviews are we forgoing of those who are extremely good aviators but chose the life of a line pilot vs otherwise? United wants perspective when they hire Military vs civilian, male vs female, etc... right? All I'm saying is the guy who flies the line month in month out and puts food on the table for his family is a go getter in my book. They provide perspective as well.

It's amazing that the guy that's on an 11-12 day off line, is commuting because of multiple base closures, economics, family reasons, etc and dedicates his precious off time to being a husband/father isn't seen as the hard charging go getter.
Nevermind the guys that sucked up the dark decade and had all this stuff called "life" happen.

And for those who've been flying Part 121 for fewer than 5 yrs... they've got to work to distinguish themselves even harder. It's not impossible, but the competition is pretty stiff.

Yep, life ain't fair. Do your best within the life limitations presented to you, but don't lose the *most (family, or whatever it is you value the most in your non-economic life) for the least (money). There's other ways of making money in this life and still get to be happy. I'd say get the degree, and if you can diversify the mickey mouse HR BS then do so, certainly not at the expense of that which you defined as the *most valuable in your life. Many times that involves leaving money on the table. Nothing wrong with that imo.

Good job, Rainman. I'm sure you're a very good driver. I should have said they very rarely see people come through with a perfect driving record. Doris had checked on a friends application for me and she pointed out that he did not have any moving violations listed in the application. That's what started the conversation and she said it was sort of an honesty check.

I dunno. The lca's, standards captains, top gun winners, soup kitchen volunteers, liver donors, and participation trophy winners hired today will be replaced by the same tomorrow. The poor line dolt will never rate a break.

List everything. EVERYTHING! Where did you get your PPL? That's a school. It belongs in the list of schools you've attended. CA, FO for the same company? Different jobs. A C-152 is not a C-150 and a C-150 is not a C-152. Ditto for EMB-135/145, A320/A319. Do you want to look like you might have some experience or not? Break it down. You never know who's looking at your app. Would it wow someone who has no idea what an aileron is? To the aviator you'll appear detail oriented. To the computer or office slave combing through resumes you'll look a lot better than that. You can take two people with exactly the same experience and make one guy present a 20 page app where the other only has 10 pages. Never lie or embellish... but do break it down and be specific.
