Who knows, a couple more announcements like this one, and they'll have to run yet another bid :-)

That's kind of how this furlogh sitution is. A friend of mine in Atlanta keeps telling me that they are baffled by their metrics right now. Loads are down, especially from Asia, but we are kicking the crap out of FDX when it comes to picking up DHL's business. Our cheapest competitor just quit domestic ops last week and we are gaining a lot of new customers such as LL Bean. When this economy turns we'll be making money hand over fist--Atl thinks it could be 30% more than when DHL was operating. They look for Big Brown to pick up some assets over this summer. We won't furlough, but if we do it will happen sooner not later. We would be hiring right now if not for the NDs.

Remember in Top Gun when Iceman is dogfighting and the radar operator on the ship realizes that there are more Migs than orginally anticipated? The skipper calls to launch Mav and is told that the catapult is broken and that it will take 5 minutes to fix. The skipper responds that the whole thing will be over in 2 minutes and to get it fixed now.

L'il J,
Interesting factoids from your contact in ATL. I don't think that anyone can deny that with this current realignment/displacement bid, the company would be in a position to furlough a small amount without a major disruption to service. However, these bids had to happen with the pulldown of the -8. So, junior guys would have gotten bumped to the panel, with a byproduct being stafffing positioning for a furlough if it was to happen. I'm still with you - I don't think a furlough will happen.

My source is a former DHL supervisor who heard it from his former coworkers. He said UPS hired many DHL sales people but so did FDX. Also, according to him those who got hired at FDX were given permanent new positions there while those hired by Big Brown were given temporary (several years) assignments and 'might' be offered extensions later on. I’d imagine getting a permanent position would make someone more inclined to give it a 100%
Not sure how accurate his info is but since he was a mid-level manager at DHL I figured there must be some truth to it...
Either way, it's a net gain for both FDX and UPS...

When the dog & pony show paraded through ANC late last year, I think the breakdown was approx 38% of former DHL customers to UPS, and 32% to FedEx ... the rest elsewhere ... USPS, pony express, etc
Hardly an a$$-wooping by either if you ask me.

Why would they lie, besides being management ...
