I see your point here and if you read my previous posts on this thread you know my take on his 'problem.'
Having said that, I think you're a little too harsh on him when it comes to his family life. He does have the right to express his disappointment and I think it's up to him and his wife to deal with their marriage... Went through a recent divorce myself so maybe I'm a little oversensitive on this issue but at least that's my $1 (or €0.0001 ) on the subject.

He's applied to every job I can think of. They're open to moving to China, Korea, etc... He's hoping for a HAL interview but so are thousands of others...

Been there done that some 25 years ago. In the 30 years I've been flying, I've learned that there is greater opportunity for marriage and divorce than a good flying job.

I must be doing something correct because I have both a good marriage and a good flying job.

A furloughed pilot has (hopefully) a job to come back to... Those guys/gals were told Sayonara for ever... Some of them had been there for 20+ years...

A huge difference...

Yeah, but if you're the Snowman I think you are, it was our little penal colony and everyone knew our name.

That's called being fired. I don't think that it is defined that you do or don't get definitive recall rights when you look those words up in the dictionary. best I could find was wikipedia for "layoff"

"Layoff is the temporary suspension or permanent termination of employment of an employee or (more commonly) a group of employees for business reasons, such as the decision that certain positions are no longer necessary or a business slow-down or interruption in work. Originally the term "layoff" referred exclusively to a temporary interruption in work, as when factory work cyclically falls off. However, in recent times the term can also refer to the permanent elimination of a position."

Anyway, sorry to hear your friends being shown the door
