Recalled pilots have been assigned to A-300 and 757SDF / Domestic.

Where the company would put a new hired is a guess . One thing is certain you will get displaced repeatedly, and moved from one aircraft and base as a junior pilot. Commuting is going to be difficult due to your schedule or you will have to move, keep this in mind for the family or a spouse with a career. The bottom of the list schedules are tough enough that we have 327 First officers Bypassing upgrade to avoid the bottom of the list, note this is approximately 20% of the FO seniority list that will take a huge reduction in compensation for a better quality of life.

obviously you were not employed back in the day with the Jim Sutton Hot Line. First, I don't believe an open time is "illegal". It may be brought up to the mediator, but illegal?? that is a misnomer.

anyway, we can have an unofficial open time ban. nothing written by the EB. just a word to enjoy your time off and spend time with one's family.

Taxi at a brisk walk, etc. We have been way too nice to the company lately. a total 180 degrees from 1996. We are in contract talks. Remember this.

Quick question (sorry for the thread hijack)-the 3.5K per year, is that 3.5K times years of service? A 20 year career equates to 70K per year in retirement?

And QOL issue's galore! Hotels, catering, drop below guarantee option, open time trips aren't scheduling's until 12 out. Now it's 48 hours, which is just stupid. etc, etc.

That's been tried before by other unions, hotshot. They all got smacked by the courts for an illegal job action.

We at UPS have no requirement to do either open time or JA. We are not other unions and we have , in the past, determined that we don't want to work overtime.
Our contract stipulates that an official open time band can only be called when we have pilots laid off. The lines are so jumbled that picking up open time is often not doable and to JA you they have to drop a pairing if you accept it.

This is good info ...

Back in 2007 before the push to fill ANC slots, my class went almost everywhere but MIA. Some ONT, some SDF B757/767 International, some domestic SDF and some SDF Md-11. I don't think any A300 at the time.

Some one else asked about RSV. It really varies by fleet. I can only speak for the international fleets. Typically 15 days RSV followed by 13 off. Occasionally this can become 20-30 days in a row during the interface of bid periods.

RSV generally does not make it to the bottom in most fleets. IOW, reserve can be a good if you life in base and don't want to fly much. So some bid it to avoid the lousy lines with numerous reports and flip-flop flying. On the other hand, I've been launched on day 1 of RSV and be gone for 13+ days. Then the next period only work 6 days of short trips.

I think the A300 and domestic B757 would have a different experience ... fwiw

Default Reality check...

For those seriously considering coming here, bear in mind, and disregard at your own peril these stark realities:

You will take at least 15, very likely far more years to upgrade.

You will get shuffled around equipment and bases.

Due to the company moving crews on jumpseats, commuting on your own company will be challenging.

You will be astounded by the treatment you receive from management and the "common man/woman" employees who are beholden to that management. Or perhaps disgusted is a better word.

Given the management priorities at the highest level, the changing dynamic of the shipping business in general, the standard flux of the domestic/global economies of the world, your job security is as if not more vulnerable here than it used to be at passenger carriers.

If your spouse has a good job, and/or your family really likes where they are commuting is your best bet, because this place changes its mind on so many things so often it is foolhardy to make life changes based on what UPS is doing this week. And as I said before, it can be a huge pain.

If you can live with, and remember all this one, five, ten and twenty years from now without stomping your feet and crossing your arms like a jilted toddler and blaming those senior to you for these realities that a guy like me laid upon you, welcome aboard.

The first time you go through SDF in the middle of the night you will look at all the gray hair and think that these guys are all ready for retirement. Reality, most are not that old , this is what night freight at UPS does to you. The last sentence of Bobs comments are very important, everyone and I mean everyone currently at UPS has worked under tougher conditions at UPS then a new hire will now experience. In excess of 10% of the Top one hundred are out on medical ..
