1. We get paid block or better. Flying slow doesn’t increase our income. AA flights have massive block times so you can fly slow and still arrive 5 minutes early.
2. Flying slow saves a little gas in flight, and saves extra taxi time fuel, as our gate will likely not be occupied upon landing.
3. Flying slow reduces the chances of arriving early and waiting for a gate, which is poor customer service. Customers don’t even notice a cruise that’s an extra 10 minutes, but sitting on the taxiway for 10 minutes and staying buckled is “absurd”. Our mainline partners get higher satisfaction from their customers.
4. Flying slow keeps our historical block times up, making future trips higher credit and more productive, as block is built on data from previous flights.
5. We get a little extra in our logbooks to get us out of this dumpster fire of an airline sooner.
Literally all parties win.

I do agree with you though on those logical points, though. However, I'm also the guy who asks "are we there yet?" at TOC, so to mitigate that, I fly the planned speed on the flight plan.

I'de always rather wait for a gate than play games 'timing' it in the air. IMO it's better customer service, because everyone can use their cell phones and the lav while we wait.. plus it gives us the first opportunity to taxi to the gate or 'changed' gate if something becomes available. Plus then I can chill instead of watching our fuel and weather etc... Chilling is important to me, you can call it a core value

If you guys want extra time in your logbooks, pick up another trip or turn.. Don't go flying around slow everytime. Fly 290/.78 like everyone else and if you wait for a gate, try shutting down an engine if you want to save fuel or whatever.. Get in early whenever possible, by as much as possible.. It will give everyone a nice break, maybe the crew can get food, get to the hotel early, help a pax out getting extra time to connect etc etc etc.. Don't slow down to NOT be early.. That's lame. Let's be real, people only do it to try to get an extra 0.1 in the book... Seriously? Don't be petty. Block out on time, fly normally, and get there when you get there.

Yep let’s fly .78 and land 40 minutes early and sit on the ground for 30 minutes... I fly at whatever speed is appropriate. If we’re late I go .80 and if we’re gonna be super early I’m flying .74 the whole way and still arriving on time or a bit early. This actually burns far less fuel and has a number of benefits as mentioned above. Everyone loves to make fun of OO, especially myself, but let’s look at their financial success vs. ours at CPZ..... I don’t do it to get the extra .1 because I don’t care. As someone else said above “just pick up an extra turn every month” which is what I do. Don’t be that fool who flys fast even when we are way early into LAX and then has to make 5 PAs about an occupied gate.

Edit: many times I've landed 20 (occasionally 30 minutes when there is no actual flow time) minutes early and we have a gate and the alleys open.. It's really nice getting to my car by the scheduled arrival time.. Everybody's happy when that happens. I rarely have to wait for a gate because we're early.. Usually it's due to congestion in the alley or a delay on the gate.
