It’s a 12 hour callout. If you can make it in 12 hours and be rested for report your fine.

UPS has a pretty big operation out of Ontario. Although not super convenient to LAX or SNA that might fill the “non-commutable” gap.

FDX might also have a flight out of SEA that you could use.

You might still have some “gaps” on the weekend but UPS and FDX might make it possible most of the week.

Commuting overnight on a UPS to ONT, then taking a cab to LAX for a full day of flying...

And signing the fitness to fly line with a straight face.

We need to have a 1 flight commuter clause if jumpseat is booked.

You can't be kicked for W/B, if a fed/etc bumps you, you still get a seat. Its better than a full fare PS ticket to assure you're getting there.

Fake JS contingency reservations littering the system until they're cancelled hurts the entire system save for a few pilots. Its almost as bad as the spousebots listing someone at 12:00:01 which also needs to be cracked down on.

Time to stop the insanity and count JS as a 1 flight commute option.

I specifically talked to an ATL chief pilot about this issue 3 years ago. You are not supposed to be listed as a jumpseater in your back up flight.

That being said, if the first flight is tight, I will list non rev right before they start clearing people and if I make it, I’ll cancel my jumpseat. Probably have both booked for maybe 20 minutes. Usually I am able to cancel the jumpseat before I list as a non rev on the earlier flight.

Not sure if this rule applies if your 1st flight is OAL.......

As a commuter, I fully support this position!! I have been kicked off a jumpseat for an Line check and the company called me immediately and booked me PS. This would be a huge QOL improvement for commuters, especially those commuting in from cities with less frequency.......

What happens if the one flight which could be arriving a few minutes before brief is delayed, canceled or diverted? Not having a backup is going to be a tough sell with our emphasis on reliability.

What about basing it on the departure time of the commute? If it's a 45 minute flight that's due in at report time, then there isn't much time to cover. But a 2 hour flight that's due in 1 hour to report allows time to call in a SC. If you're able to give 3 hours heads up then you're allowed to have just one flight.

It was a big hit to QOL coming from an airline that allows one flight that arrives at report time, to now I'm arriving 4 hours or more early in order to follow the rules.

You’re right but to a degree the company already assumes this risk with deadheads. When I flew domestic it was commonplace to deadhead to a hub only to immediately work another flight. No backups there so the company must have had confidence in its ability to recrew in the hubs in the event of the delays, diversions, etc.

This. A JS on company metal as a single option would be helpful.

But if we're so reliable, it shouldn't be an issue...

And fine, maybe pad it by half an hour extra for the one flight to qualify or something. But they DH pilots all the time with an hour or less before their next flight and the only concern there is the optimizer saying it'll save a minute of credit.

One flight JS policy is fair and very reasonable.
