How expensive is it really? Don't we own the sims and already have the instructors on payroll? Aren't we paying the light bill for that SIM to sit idle anyways? I seriously want to understand because it makes no sense at surface level.

This is what happens when you have peoples bonuses tied to metrics. Be it the MIP plan or things in individual C-Level contracts.

Saw it in other industries, see it here.

Somebody might have gotten a "reduce training costs by X" directive, with no impact on them if it screws the operations side up. Cut hiring, even if it hurts next year, no backfills on AEs, smaller AEs etc. While the sim and salary staff is basically overhead, less events for NSLIs, less pilots on training pay etc.
Metric made. Bonus collected.

Think of the D-0 over everything else stuff.
Bad NPS from cleaning jamming up passengers? Not thier problem.
Pilots dropping brake for a "stuck chock" that probably doesn't exist? Not their problem. Flight pay comes out of someone elses budget
Prioritize crews pushing outbound vs catching inbound? Again, A-0 isn't their metric, not their problem.

-330NEO deliveries winding down
-MAX10s delayed until who the hell even knows

…all while still sending 763ERs and some 752s to the desert.

What do we need to hire for other than attrition plus a little extra?
Currently getting 220s also.

good points above. I was simply thinking of the additional revenue generated from flying the slis rather than the cost of sticking 2-3 active crew members in simulators instead of on the line.

Pretty sure the cost of actual training is negligible, but the cost of having 1,000 more pilots on payroll is significant.... especially if the flying isn't increasing accordingly due to above mentioned delays. And pilots hired now would be hitting the line during winter months when ALV is the lowest.

It's all the personnel costs associated with it. You have to pay the pilots what is effectively a monthly guarantee. Then pay the indoc instructors to not fly. Then you have to pull SLI back off the line to train them. That results in MORE GS to staff the flying. If they make it to OE, they have to pay a pilot to stay home and LCP pay.

I suppose it could be easier, but what is hard about toggling on/off? It's just changing two boxes from Yes/No, isn't it? I've seen the comment before, am I missing something?

I personally love auto accept. I put in specific slips and the phone doesn't ring unless I'm getting the trip.

Deltanet->My Division->iCrew->clearing whatever messages are there(If icrew even works properly on the first try)->Schedules->PCS->Slip Requests->Green Slips->In Base Without Conflict-> Change->[make changes]->Adjust Qualifiers-> Save

What on Earth is simple about that? Now, how about on your phone?

Of course, everything we do here is needlessly complicated from basic schedule manipulation to how we handle vacations....And it all has to be done through iCrew, which itself is utterly insane in 2025.

most of us have lived through multiple panaceas of ‘this new technology’ that will ‘make everything better’, when looking back it really just made us more frantic and served to delay decisions until the very last minute. Maybe we can help be the catalyst to help the company save itself from itself and execute scheduling adjustments further in advance.

Back on topic: I was hopeful in June and July that dal would start new hire classes this fall until I learned of the borderline irrational reason for delaying training just to post a profitable year 100. A survey of most long-term employees might show that we’d be happy to have a ‘normal’ year 100 and go for super-duper profitability in year 101 when we don’t have to eat the cost of a major safety incident in February. Oh and also an economic freakout based on questionable motives.
If Ed is retiring, (if means when in 2026) then there needs to be max profit this year. He has bonuses and options that need a good year for full value.
