Gotta agree with Oofff here, it’s a moving target, depending on which manager is directing which strategy.

So yes, adequate is subjective but different than historical.
so it was the norm coming out of an economic recession, and has not been in well over a decade, which coincidentally was when we started printing money?

based off what I have seen, a grid with mostly blue days in the summer seem to be a symptom of overstaffing.

That’s exactly what they want you to think. We are 40% of a $10B+ payroll. Why would it’s be labeled required?

Are you under the impression most people want the company to be "fully staffed" by your definition?

I, for one, hope it stays the way it was the last year and as others have described... understaffed in the summer and overstaffed in the off seasons. Make extra in the summer and get extra time off in the fall/winter.

Unfortunately people complain when they can’t get green slips galore then complain they can’t drop trips because coverage is so bad. Can’t have it both ways.

reserve levels or adequate staffing? I can understand the argument for staffing being subjective to some degree although even then you can quantify based off fleet size, flight frequency, and category size for each seat ie WB 15 A’s and 18 B’s per aircraft. Arbitrarily number. Having enough reserves to cover the airlines summer schedule has always been a hard number carriers would shoot for. While RRPY is nice and greenies even better running the operation “hot” is just another way of saying we’re understaffed and trying to cut costs by doing more with less. I personally believe if anyone is sitting here trying to argue we are properly staffed their either drinking too much kool-aid or not experiencing the strains that will inevitably get worse as we deepen into summer.

my bet is that they were above the pwa required levels throughout that period.

Are the iCrew reserve levels not calculated on the formula in the PWA? Honest question.

On a related note, we're already seeing the cracks in the system for the summer. Reroutes, tracking not being able to figure out who is where, flights with missing pilots (and FAs for that matter), 2 hours on hold trying to figure out what's going on, etc. I can't imagine that, A: more staffing wouldn't help this. They're constantly robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Well, that may be true, but other than the 717 a few years back, that’s always been the case for the last 10 years at least, afaik.

The PWA minimum is kinda meaningless in real terms. It’s like the actual fuel needed to get to a destination, leaving no room for normal landing fuel, much less contingency or alternate fuel. Flaming out upon reaching the gate is never the goal.

How much ‘extra’ is the debate
