The rule is, masks are to be worn. If the guy takes it off when they get airborne and refuses to even pretend to wear it, what are they supposed to do? Selective enforcement of rules destroys what ever credibility they had in the first place. It isn't that far removed from passengers self-upgrading.
No one is dying because they didnt wear a mask. Put it on the company to go after the passenger in question to make the passengers clutching their pearls feel better.

Nobody should be lecturing an incompetent passenger, but it is your job as PIC to inform your crew of it’s roles. You’re not to escalate, that simple. All that’s required is a name and seat number for the message to operations.

I’ll help you out, as you seem to have difficulty comprehending a very easy procedure. Call operations, report the individual, and have a redcoat meet said person at the door when you land.

Again, you are making a lot of assumptions. Every time I've seen a FA interact, it's just "sir, please put your mask on.". And every time someone has been kicked off, there has been no confrontation. And in fact, of the times passengers have been removed for behavior by police, the FAs effectively stopped interacting and stayed in the galley in order to not escalate. They are required to give them the final warning card and from there, it's out of their hands. I've literally never seen a FA "escalate" a situation that would have warranted a passenger taking their pants off or throwing anything.

Is it?
I kinda figured they were trained to do their cabin stuff and I was trained to do my cockpit stuff. If the PIC has to inform each and every FA of their roles on each and every leg, that’s going to be some brief.

Hopefully that clears up your confusion from my statement.

Delta has issued a crystal clear, non-ambiguous memo on how to handle this on the ground and in the air.
There's no room for interpretation what to do when it comes to mask compliance.
Why make this job harder than it needs to be? Follow company policies and they'll have your back.

There's no room for interpretation what to do when it comes to mask compliance (proprietary, so I won't put it up here). Company has 100% anticipated mask compliance, has a gradual escalation policy, and they've told us EXACTLY how they want it handled.
Would that all passenger challengers were so simple.

how about FOM 11.5.3.4. Read the sentence below the two bulletized items. The one about exercising some judgement by not going after passenger directly. Heck, the whole section is worth the 20 sec to read. Something about expanding the team….. I think I heard that somewhere.
