Yes, it is an option. Service comes with rewards and consequences and thankfully some choose to still serve. They should be commended for that choice. I don’t like to get involved with the MIL leave debate because it doesn’t affect me. My service was a long time ago and purely guard. To say anything accusatory is out of line IMHO. People know the rules and the consequences for breaking them. I find it very very difficult to believe there is any significant amount of people risking their careers in both the military and at Delta for some days off. This is more about someone disliking the rules rather than a service member breaking them.

In other words, I think I agree with you that SS should have been like GS in terms of guardrails. Naming it a different slip can also be helpful. Don't get me started on PBS bidding for SC periods that require YS in icrew.

I'm not so sure. SS with a leveling mechanism (with counters like GS, and only 1 per PCS run) could essentially be a long-notice GS, and I don't hear anyone complaining about GS in their current form (auto-accept excluded.) It makes sense that they're different because short-notice vs PCS, but leveling-wise they could be very similar. And I'm not sure why that would be a bad thing.

1) Keep SS as-is
2) Make SS have a counter like GS do, and award only 1 per PCS cycle
3) Make SS count towards GS counter, and GS count towards SS counter. Share a counter. (1 per PCS cycle?)
4) Get rid of SS altogether
I personally don't like #1 or #4. I think #2 and #3 are much better. And I think that 1 SS per PCS cycle is important.

Yes it is…
if said pilot can’t drop their schedule without Mil leave, it’s screwing a pilot on RSV or someone senior that could use their APD/IVD.
Sooo many ways we can skin this cat, these are some of them. Also if they decide to use their MIL leave to pick a SS that they couldn’t pick up because it conflicts with the trip dropped.

The junior pilot that "got screwed on reserve" wouldn't even be on the seniority list without mil leave. Staying at home wasn't the option, staying at a regional was. The senior pilot only got "screwed" if they submitted the APD at the same time as the mil leave. It's only a one PCS run window of opportunity. What about the one extra (optional for pilot) GS that went out because Delta already used up all the reserves? On a micro level you can find individual examples where the APD was missed by one PCS cycle, on a macro level it's a huge boost for pay and staffing.

Ahh. Ok I can see your point there and its merit. I think we can agree then that SS in their current form lack a proper leveling mechanism. I'm curious what others think, let's brainstorm the last few posts.
1) Keep SS as-is
2) Make SS have a counter like GS do, and award only 1 per PCS cycle
3) Make SS count towards GS counter, and GS count towards SS counter. Share a counter. (1 per PCS cycle?)
