What is the deal with the "ACARS Time Change" emails? I get maybe 10 per year. They claim they didn't receive the flight times via ACARS, but then the email shows the times they do have, and they look perfectly correct.

Most of the time i get that, the times are correct. I'm guessing they have some other form of ascertaining block in time if ACARS didn't work and it's a automated process of QCing the times. This is one of the reasons I still keep one of those little blue logbooks, though it's more so I can QC my pay.

Most common reason:
Once the MCD opens, there’s a 8? minute timer that begins. That gives you time to update landings, takeoff power, Cat 3 or RNAV logs. When the timer ends, the data is sent. (You can tell when this happens by the ACARS landing data going all blanks) If you power the aircraft down early or pull the red CBs for the FMS/ACARS before the data is auto sent, it will usually trigger the ACARS time emails as it didn’t receive the data and had to rely on early times sent pre- block in. (Your fleet may vary)

Things like this used to be taught, or at least known by LCAs doing OEs.

All lost now, like tears in the rain.

Ive been told that, at least on the airbus, cycling the IRU’s will also interrupt the ACARS send in some way (which is why you should wait to see the dashes before cycling them for a through flight). I have no idea if that’s actually true. Anyone?

it definitely is. as soon as you kill the irs switches, you’ll see a scratchpad message about the datalink being lost.

From my experience, you're much more likely to get a call from the back if you can feel yourself gently moving side to side in your seat during light chop than you are if it's just a bit of the shakes.

That’s what I’ve been told before, but it can’t be that. This was during a turn and I watched the ACARS times blank before I even started loading the next flight.

Most of the time I get the emails when the IRUs are turned off during the secure checklist prior to the Arrival ACARS being blanked out.

I'm surprised how many people on the Airbus fleet don't know that.
